'Above the Rest in Canpus Housing" Perry, center, relaxes with his two roommates in a London pub about a week before the crash of Pan Am Flight 103. Both roommates were killed in the disaster. Q 3$i 7 +i N, 4; i 11 ~t i ' throughout the semester, that with Ken's luck the flight would crash. And it did. It was funny at the time. Just three friends making wisecracks. But now, to Perry, there's no humor in it. "Ken was one of the nicest, brightest, hardworking guys you've ever met. A true friend who would go out of his way for you. Ken probably would have been a friend I would have had for the next 20 or 30 years... And then this thing hap- pened and I felt terrible that we were joking about it," he remembered. This plane disaster isn't Perry's first encounter with a friend's death - a childhood friend was killed in a car accident two years ago. One of Perry's motivations for goingabroad, the University, was a major factor in securing his sanity throughout the ordeal. Coming back to the University, seeing his friends who had called and worried about him, back to the safety of Ann Ar- bor and his fraternity, Beta Theta Pi, helped him deal with his loss. He knew he could come back to school and lose himself in his classes and activities, hopefully making it easier not to think about his nightmare. Investigators in Scotland have now determined that a bomb placed in a suitcase caused the crash. In fact, two weeks before the flight, an anonymous bomb threat was re- ceived at the United States embassy in Helsinki, Finland. It warned that a bomb would be placed on a Pan American flight originating in Frankfurt, bound for the United States. This threat, although passed on to Pan American officials and airport security, was not conveyed to the public. In the days following the disaster, a number of terrorist groups claimed they had blown up the plane. "It was some lunatic, some sick person did this. I went through hys- teria, to disbelief, to extreme anger, to a sense of numbness where I felt it would just hit me. When different people started claiming that it was their act, as if it was something you should be proud of and take credit for... I wanted to kill the people re- sponsible." Perry sits forward, his indifference replaced by frustration and anger. He speaks quickly and anxiously -for the first time since beginning his story. "If I had been on that plane there's nothing I could have done to prevent dying. It's not like if I wore my seatbelt on the plane, I might have survived... They didn't have any choice." Knowing how close he came to being on the disastrous Flight 103, and how near he was to the same fate as the passengers aboard has influ- enced his life, he says. "It's affected my life in certain ways. I'm more careful, I dowear my seatbelt more. I guess we all have to go through something to make us realize how important it is. "Senseless violence bothers me more. I'm not reckless, but I am living life with a zest. I value people more than I did. Frieadships mean a lot more to me, and my family is closer now." Perry is again relaxed, passively reclining in his chair. He stares out the window, pausing as if searching for the best way to define his experience. He begins, slowly. "As time goes on, I've been try- ing to think about the now and the future, and not think of the past as much... Everyone thinks that they're invulnerable, that death can't touch them, like as the clich6 goes, 'it won't happen to me.' I used to think the same way." Perry, like very few others, was lucky - the other kind of luck - the kind that saves lives. PASS IT AROUND!
