"Our students deprive themselves of
one of the very important aspects of col-
lege life by suitcasing," he said. "Some
national studies have shown that the
suitcaser doesn't do as well academical-
"because he or she tends not to adjust
*ell to the college environment.
Leaving for home on the weekends is
primarily "a freshman and sophomore
problem," Bailey said. "Freshmen are
going home to security."
In many cases, however, students can
adjust better to classes - and life on
their own - if they spend more time at
school, Bailey said.
"Suitcasers are less capable of coping
*ith the professional world that they're
supposedly training to become a part
of," he said.
Dr. Jerry Wilder, vice president for
student affairs, considers the close pro-
ximity between Western Kentucky U.
and most students' homes a factor in
why so many students leave. "It's close
enough to get home on weekends for the
comforts of home," he said.
Wilder echoed Bailey's concern. "I
n't think they feel like a significant
part of the university," he said.
Going home for a job is understand-
able, Bailey said. But students who go
home every weekend to visit are "taking
a narrow viewpoint on education."
