er's, he and the guitarist had jammed
together for fun for the past few
years, and eventually the two began
writing songs. When Lapides left, he
was a natural choice to replace him.
Neff's entrance into the band has
also added a peculiar twist to their
beefed-up sound - like Fletcher,
Neff is a longtime bluegrass fan.
Whereas Fletcher only added the oc-
casional country lick to Lapides'
compositions, many of the pair's
new songs have a near-cowpunk feel
- and the band that once covered the
Dream Syndicate's "Burn" now has a
Johnny Cash tune in their repertoire.
This is not to say that an Oppo-
sums show is now a Headbanger's
Ball cum square dance. The band still
retains some of its folkish leanings
,and mixes in a lot of dreamy,
midtempo rock with its new sound.
One of the reasons the band chose
its name, Fletcher says, is the fact
that the reknowned marsupial is
ubiquitous in Washtenaw County -
,specially in the form of road pizza.
But don't be fooled; names aside, this
is one band with no intention of
playing dead.

Rep Theater explodes
stereotypes in Babes

W ITH pen in hand, I waited pa-
tiently for what I anticipated would
be a "run-of-the-mill" University
student production. Figuring adjec-
tives like "delightful" and
"refreshing" can usually be applied
to the average performance, I began
jotting them down.
Moments later, in a burst of en-
thusiasm, about 20-25 actors sur-
rounded the audience. One female
actor shouted an abrasive "Fuck
you!" to her male cast members,
who retaliated appropriately with
chants of "Women are prudes!
Women are sluts!" I furtively
scratched out those previously pre-
pared adjectives.
Contrary to a standard play with a
plot and specific characters, the tal-
ented members of the Residence Hall
Repertory Theatre troupe engaged in
a volatile production which attacked
sexist stereotypes and "norms" of
today's world.
Entitled Babes and Biceps - Is

That All?, the production included a
coed cast who alternately acted out
different scenarios which all pointed
to a central theme: social stereotypes
have become so prevalent and
powerful that individual personalities
are easily obscured by socially de-
fined constraints of "male" and
"female."
One of the more outstanding ex-
amples of such sexism included a
scene where a "typical" man
(naturally attired in football equip-
ment and holding a machine gun)
and the "standard" woman (adorned
with a kitchen apron, and holding a
baby) were besieged by cast mem-
bers who shouted to the man and
woman respectively, "Take it like a
man!" or "Act like a lady!"
Their humorous satires attacked
advertisements whose sexism is so
subtle it often goes unnoticed. The
group also dealt with tragic issues
such as rape, where sexist stereo-
types account for such inequalities as
the presence of four rape crisis cen-
ters for women in Ann Arbor and the
absence of any such centers for men

(inferring that, as one actor con,
cluded, "Men don't need support").:
All the actors exhibited df
namism and sincerity comparable-to
their concern for the subject matter,
Amidst the hurled obscenities and
entertaining scenarios, a serick'"
message emerged: we cannot corn-
tinue to obey social stereotypes anrd
"blame the other sex" for unfir
judgements, but must instead wciA
to discover the individuals beneath'
the stereotypes that keep us all apart.
