page 8- The Michigan Daily - Monday, January 30, 1989 Verge Continued from Page 7 If this sounds like a very odd play, you have exactly the right impression. Although it would be very difficult to describe the plot, it was not difficult to understand, due to a concept in theater upon which most playwrights depend. To make their play effective, the audience must participate in a "willing suspension of disbelief." They must trust that the producers of the show will pro- duce a believeable story, if only within the context of the play. Nowhere is this more necessary than in On The Verge. To say that this play was about self-discovery would be stretching it into the realms of seriousness. Mary, the archaeologist of the group, does a little soul-searching, but for the most part, the play stayed away from heavy personal investigations. All three women, Kathleen Schmidt as Mary, Carol Sheperd as Fanny, and Heather McRae-Woolf as Alexandra, did a splendid job of making their characters come to life. Their characters were revealed to the audience through the use of frequent little cameo speeches which split the action into many parts. The play was embellished by I fourth actor, Stephen Angus, who was remarkably versatile and sparkling in his roles as The Gorge Troll, Nicky Paradise, Mr. Coffee, Madame Nhu, Gus, Grover, and Al- fonse. All the roles he played were supplementary characters to the ad- ventures, and his lines were wonder- fully creative. Angus also played Simon Gascoyne in last semester's The Real Inspector Hound. On The Verge is a comedy which makes some light jabs at the 20th century, but for the most part, it stays with the funny aspects of the modern era, such as "I Like Ike" campaign buttons, Kodaks and eggbeaters. Have you ever thought about what an eggbeater would look like to someone digging up our civi- lization in two hundred years? The second half of the play seemed a little corny. At that point, though, I had begun to understand the play a little more, and maybe because of this, some of the charm and nov- elty of its concept began to wear off. This doesn't mean that is wasn't worth seeing. One would have to se it to understand and appreciate it fully. On The Verge was well per- formed and creatively staged - a sweet little foray into the surreal. 1IE Lfil Ck 4A I New York City Seattle $99 roundtrip $99 roundtrip Phoenix $99 roundtr!
