to NBC baseball

No more Bob Costas. No more Vin Scully.
No more baseball on NBC.
On December 14, Major League Baseball announced a new television
contract which gives CBS the right to broadcast 12 regular season
games, the All-Star game and both the playoffs and World Series,
beginning in 1990.
And NBC? Well, they still have the Breeder's Cup.
NBC's "Game of the Week" used to be something to look forward to.
It began with that memorable tease. I would wait with baited breath as
the last commercial faded to black. Classic scenes, spine tingling images
of baseball past came to the screen. Henry Aaron rounding the bases after
number 715, Babe Ruth speaking into an NBC microphone, Carlton
Fisk waving his 1975 World Series blast fair, Bill Buckner letting the
ball roll through his legs. It got me every time.
MARV ALBERT WOULD then start things off from "30 Rock"
in New York City with the pregame a half hour before the first pitch.
Gone are the days of Albert's quick one-liners and beneath-the-surface
insults. Mary has a knack for making major sports personalities look
like complete idiots.
I guess Mary will just have to make do with Jets games on dismal
Sunday afternoons for the local New York crowd.
Bob Costas, the newest golden boy of sportscasting, will no longer
bless the baseball press box. No more Toledo Mudhens caps. No more
rating the best and worst stadiums' foods. By the way, Costas' annual
favorite was the bratwurst in Milwaukee. Not to worry, though, Costas
can still be seen on TV.
That is if you are so much of an insomniac that at 1:30 in the
morning you watch "Later", which Costas hosts. Geez, even World
Series night games end before that time.
NO MORE TONY KUBEK and his opinionated views. "Bob, I
just don't agree with you." Hopefully, Sports Illustrated will still go to
him for an occasional colorful quote.
And as much as some hated him, Scully has consistently been one of
the best in the booth. If he complimented a player, you knew that
player was one to watch. So maybe Scully went overboard sometimes,
but, hey, that's baseball.
Maybe Dick Vitale will be able to infuse the same emotional feeling
into baseball as he so eloquently does for college basketball. Then again,
probably not.
I'm sure that CBS will do, well, a terrible job in NBC's place. CBS
is a football and college basketball station. Let them stick to winter
sports. You don't see NBC going after the final four.
I've heard Brent Musberger do baseball play-by-play for CBS radio
during the past few fall classics and he's pathetic. He's the reason that
some people call baseball boring.
I CAN JUST SEE it now - "I'm Brent Musberger here in New
York. Welcome to MLB Today, here on CBsssssss." God forbid.
And John Madden will do the play-by-play. If you think violence in
baseball has increased, just wait until 1990. "Look at that putout,"
Madden will say. "Ooph, Bang, down and dirty. Those first basemen sure
are tough. I just love it when they spike a guy in the face."
Dick Butkus, of course, will be doing the predictions. "Yeah, the
Dodgers have that big guy, Kirk Gibson, right? He used to play football,
I'll go with the Dodgers."
Peter Ueberroth looks like a genius. He'll go down in history as a
brilliant sports administrator for signing the $1.1 billion contract.
Maybe there is a bright spot. Attendance might just go up.
