The Michigan Daily - Friday, January 27, 1989 -Page 11 'M' does buddy check with MSU 'M' set for muckers, OSU's -BY ERIC LEMONT The Michigan women's swimming team enters this weekend undefeated in seven meets and owner of a 28-dual-match unbeaten streak. In East Lansing, another team currently possesses three wins and something else - the distinction of being the squad Michigan faced 29 matches ago. Michigan-Michigan State. Big Ten football rivals? Think so. Dueling duos on ice? Sure. Swimming schools locked in a mortal match of revenge and rivalry? Not quite. When asked if the Spartans' victory three years ago would be a motivating factor in this weekend's meet, Wolverines coach Jim Richardson was skeptical. "I don't think that will," Richardson said. "I just think the fact that it's MSU will. (The swimmers on both sides) all know Bach other, so pride is on the line," he said. First-year swimmer Jennifer Jackson also downplayed the revenge factor. F "It's been mentioned," she said. "We're beginning a tradition and we don't want to let that slip. We're gearedup." State is led by NCAA All- American Mary Schonely in the breaststroke and Big Ten finalist Kelly Smyles in the 200-yard individual medley and butterfly. Jennifer Collette gives the Spartans strength in the middle-distance freestyle events. Richardson is also impressed by State's strong one- and three-meter diving team anchored by Julie Ferrell. Both swimmer and coach emphasized the fatigued state of the team. Richardson said about half the team is "broken down," the planned result of a stretch of endurance training. Hopefully, Jackson said, the long-distance training taking place now will make the actual races easier and thus improve times. Even a tired Wolverines squad, however, should have no problem in defeating Michigan State. Jackson said some of the team's goals will be to perform well in what will be their last home dual meet of the season and to shave the 400 medley relay's time down to three minutes 55 seconds. But the Wolverines will have a very different goal if they don't take care of business in West Lafayette tonight -starting a new win streak. clingers' Wings tell Probert to stay at home Schembechler ... glee for McGee Michigan gets top tight end BY MICHAEL SALINSKY You can't really say that Michigan football had not landed any future stars, but they had not landed any of the big ones, those few who every coach and recruiter around the country covet, the creme de la creme. Until yesterday. Tony McGee, a 6-foot-5, 235- pound tight end from Terre Haute South High School in Indiana, announced yesterday that he will sign with the Wolverines when the official signing period begins Feb. 8. He chose Michigan over Indiana, Notre Dame, USC, and UCLA, at a press conference in the team teaching room at his high school, attended by Terre Haute press and a number of students. "Academically and athletically he felt Michigan was best for him. He said he fit in better with the players there," McGee's coach, Rod Shafer, said. McGee, who lived in Grand Rapids until high school, is arguably the best prep tight end in the country. The Detroit Free Press put him on top of their Best of the Midwest team as the best prospect from all the Big Ten states. An all-state selection as tight end and defensive end, McGee caught 56 passes in the last two years for over 1500 yards. "Everyone from Bob Knight to the lieutenant general made a push for him to stay in state," Shafer said. "But (McGee) grew up dreaming about being Blue. It was a good situation for him. He'll come in as a first or second tight end. He'll be an impact player." BY TAYLOR LINCOLN The Michigan hockey team is not looking forward to this weekend's two-game series at Ohio State. For starters, OSU Ice Rink receives a unanimous vote among coach Red Berenson and the players for being the poorest facility in the CCHA. Defenseman Myles O'Connor characterized the 1,580 seat area simply as "a dump." Furthermore, the Buckeyes' style of play has won few admirers among the Michigan contingency. "They have a smaller rink and they have a style of play that is suited to it," Berenson said. "They play a lot of clutch-and-grab hockey." O'Connor said: "They are an annoying team. They have a lot of muckers and clingers." Annoying? In November, the Buckeyes were in last place and had won only one game when they visited Ann Arbor. The Wolverines were ranked fifth in the country and were in second place in the league, but the Buckeyes headed home with a win and a tie for the series. "They embarrassed us," O'Connor said. "I think a lot of us saw that they were in last place and took them for granted." Michigan will not be taking Ohio' State for granted this weekend. Including their series at Michigan, the Buckeyes are 6-5-3 in their last 14 league games. The Buckeyes are still in eighth place, but are only two points 'They are an annoying team. They have a lot of muckers and clingers.' - Hockey player Myles O'Connor behind sixth-place Western Michigan. They trail fifth-place Bowling Green by five points but have played two fewer games. "We will not be favored down there," Berenson said. "We'll be underdogs." The Wolverines have given up only five goals in their last four games. Goalie Warren Sharples has been near perfect in the two series, but has also been helped by solid defensive play. OhiotState's 75 goals scored places them in last place in the Minnesota beats Illinois MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - Minnesota upset top-ranked Illinois, 69-62, Thursday night as Willie Burton had 20 points and 13 rebounds and sparked a first-half burst that sent the Illini to their first loss of the season. Illinois, 17-1 overall and 4-1 in the Big Ten, had been the only undefeated Division I team. The Illini, playing without standout guard Kendall Gill, who was injured in their last game, this week had earned their first No. 1 ranking since 1952. Minnesota, 11-5 and 3-3 pulled off its first second upset in 12 days, having beaten then-No. 5 Iowa on Jan. 14. Melvin Newbern added 16 points for Minnesota while Kenny Battle and Nick Anderson scored 12 points to pace Illinois. league in that catagory, but they do have two scorers with more points than Michigan's top scorer, Todd Brost. Center Paul Rutherford and right- winger Andy Forcey are tied for the team lead with 36 points each. "We'll need to keep the puck moving quickly," said defenseman Todd Copeland, who has scored seven points in the last two weeks. "We won't be able to carry it as much as we did against Ferris." Michigan can ill afford to come up empty this weekend. The Wolverines have won back-to-back series for the first time this year, to rise from fifth place in the league standings to only one-point behind third-place Illinois-Chicago. Despite Berenson's assertion that Michigan will not be favored this weekend, the Wolverines are set on heading north with two wins. "I don't think anybody on this team will be happy unless we sweep them," O'Connor said. BY ADAM BENSON SPECIAL TO THE DAILY DETROIT - Detroit Red Wings star and troublemaker Bob Probert will "stay home, until we decide a further course of action", according to Wings general manager Jimmy Devallano. Probert arrived at Joe Louis Arena a half hour late for Wednesday's game with the Buffalo Sabres. When Red Wings coach Jacques Demers asked Probert why he was late, the player said he got caught in traffic. The Red Wings suspended Probert 'for the Buffalo game and have 'removed him from the roster for the time being. Devallano's banishing of Probert is not unique. In 1986, the Washington Capitals took similar Jction against star Bobby Carpenter, whose temper tantrums disrupted the i -team. After sitting out for a month, Carpenter was traded to the New York Rangers. "Obivously, Jacques and I have not had a lot of time to talk and find out what our opinions are," Devallano said. "We asked him to stay home indefinitely." Devallano noted that this latest action is not a suspension. This punishment will prevent Probert from taking legal action to force his reinstatement. "I don't know what Bob thinks and what makes him do certain things," said a tired Demers. "We're in the market to try and get winning games, and trying to get all our players to work together in the same goal and the same direction. It is obvious that he does not want to cooperate in that department." It may be worth it for the Wings to keep him away - the club is 9- 10-4 in games he has played in this season.
