A Women's Swimming vs. Michigan State Sunday, 2 p.m. Canham Natatorium 'The Michigan Daily MWrest Bar-ing] SPORTS Gymnastics vs. Ohio State Saturday, 7:30 p.m. Crisler Arena Page 9 Thursday, January 26, 1989 s lers set to battle Hawks injuries, this Wolverines aim high is Michigan s year Michigan coach Dale Bahr has enjoyed success both as a wrestler at Iowa State and as a coach. Since ,:coming to Michigan in 1978, he has led the Wolverines to a record of 107-65-2. The victory total leaves him behind only Cliff Keen, who coached in Ann Arbor for 42 years. Last season, the Wolverines finished sixth nationally and came within an eyelash of knocking off Iowa as Big Ten champions. Michigan has not won a :'Big Ten title since 1973. With the return of four All-Americans on this season's squad, Bahr seems to be in the position to achieve his greatest success as a coach and to finally unseat the Hawkeyes. Coach Bahr discussed his personal thoughts, his view of his team, and his relationship with Iowa coach Dan Gable with Daily Staffer Steven * Cohen. Daily: What would it mean to you to beat Iowa? Bahr: Since I came to Michigan, a dream of mine has been to knock off Iowa. When I first got here they were a dominating team and Michigan wasn't anything to speak of and now we're at the point where we feel we can succesfully challenge B Iowa. We want to live up to the ranking. ... hope We have to take it one match at a time and beat the keams we're supposed to beat. I'd like the Hawks to beat the teams they're supposed to beat. We don't want to meet anybody else in the finals, let's put it that ,way. I don't want Minnesota to knock them off. I ~want us to knock them off. I don't want anything to happen to them. We're healthy, we're fairly well- --rested, we're confident. We just have to get the job done. We're not going in, like maybe some teams of the -past, in awe or in fear of the University of Iowa. We're .,going in there having seen them at the Northern Open. We've wrestled the Oklahoma States, the Arizona ,,.States, and the Penn States. We're not afraid of names ,anymore. We're not afraid of uniforms and they're just ~another uniform out there. We have to wrestle like we're Michigan. D: What do. you think, of a possible matchup this weekend against Iowa? B: I think there will be battles at every single ,weight class. I think the thing Iowa is going to do, is ,,appeal to their tradition. I guess that's the big battle. They're trying to maintain the Iowa tradition and we're ',trying to knock off that Iowa tradition. They've had ,tie tradition and they've had the record and we're like the upstarts trying to prove them wrong. Sometimes, the upstarts are not very confident- they don't know that they can get the job done. I have a sense of my guys being very confident and having no question in their minds that they can get the job done. D: What is your relationship with Dan Gable? B: Well, Gable and I got into a little tiff about 6 or 7 years ago, and I think at the time he didn't think Michigan was enough of a quality team for him, and took us off the schedule. I kind of resent that attitude. We participated in tougher tournaments this year, against as tough or tougher wrestling schools. They've wrestled Penn State, we've wrestled Penn State. They haven't wrestled Okie State, they will wrestle Oklahoma State. We've wrestled Ohio State and beat them worse than they did. And so, I guess the point being you know, is we feel, well, we feel slighted. I've always felt that way over the last five or six years, that hey, that's .okay let him have his opinion and we're just going to work for the day where (we can prove it to him). It's not a personal vendetta or anything but at the same time, you know, I guess we've really worked hr hard to prove him wrong and where at the point where we would like to for title finish up what we started. We were both teammates at Iowa State, both national champions in '68 at the same time. I was the captain of the team, I wrestled with him for two years. We were both close in weight - I was a 145-pounder and he was a 137-pounder - so we wrestled a lot. We travelled together. I have great admiration for him, he's a great wrestling coach. He has a great program over there. But all of those things don't mean anything. It will be Michigan vs. Iowa, not Dan Gable vs. Dale Bahr. It will be his ten guys vs. our ten guys. BY STEVEN COHEN If everything goes according to plan, the Michigan wrestling team will be in a position to hand Iowa their first Big Ten dual meet loss in over 17 years. "One of the things this streak has done is put more pressure on the individual wrestlers, " Iowa coach Dan Gable said. "It is starting to get too much publicity. Our wrestlers in addition to worrying about beating their opponent, worry about keeping the streak alive." Fourth-ranked Michigan may solve that problem for Iowa, but first the two teams must get to the finals of the Great American Duals Classic. Michigan, seeded first, should have no trouble reaching the final match. Iowa, on the other hand must get past the winner of the Northwestern-Minnesota match. "We're thinking about the other teams first," Gable said. "We just barely beat Minnesota (22-17) last time." In its meet with Minnesota, Iowa was hurt by the absence of No.2 ranked 167-pounder John Heffernan, who is doubtful for this weekend. Gable says he would rather lose the tournament than risk further injury to Heffernan. Michigan expects to win the 134 to 167-pound weight classes, home to its "Murderers Row" of No.1 ranked John Fisher, No.7 ranked Larry Gotcher, Sam Amine, No.1 ranked Joe Pantaleo, and No. 4 Mike Amine. Gable does not see a matchup with Michigan as being one-sided. He feels that Iowa has the edge at 118 and 126, and at heavyweight. The 134, 150, 177, and 190-pound classes he sees as a toss up. Those on Michigan's side feel differently. Michigan coach Dale Bahr feels that at 177 and 190 Michigan has the edge with the streaking James Dye against first- year wrestler Dave Finch. At 190, Bahr feels that Michigan's Fritz Lehrke has been wrestling solidly lately, while Iowa's Brooks Simpson has struggled somewhat. "I don't think it will be close," Gotcher said. "We won't lose from 134-67, and I think we'll win two of the last three. I'm not really excited. I know we'll win. Its nothing really to get excited about, just another win." But Larry, what about their 98 match streak? "Oh. They'll lose this one." R4 Ub~e Daoiei~J at s 'Last year, in my opinion, they took the Big Ten championship from us. It was ours and they took it.
