ARTS Thursday, January 26, 1989 L The Michigan Daily Page 7 Verge: The future is then BY DEBRA CHESNIN ALMOST everyone has heard of Amelia Earhardt, the intrepid pilot of the early 20th cen- tury. Some people have also heard of Nellie Bly, a woman from a slightly earlier time period. Not rmtany people, however, actually know that Nellie Bly wasn't the wife of the Bounty's captain, but rather a fearless explorer of the late 19th century. On the Verge, or the geography of yearning is about three women like Nellie Bly. They are fearless explorers of 1888 who decide to go on an adventurous journey. Like Earhardt, the three women, Mary, Fanny, and Alexandra, run into some strange and mysterious encounters in their t search for "Terra Incognita." As their journey progresses, they find that the land changes. Director Ben Landman describes the changes as going from "jungle to arctic tundra to swamp land." They also find strange artifacts, such as an "I like Ike" button, and use strange language. Soon they realize that they are travel- ling through more than just unexplored territory; they are travelling through time. The play depicts the women's reactions to the discovery that they have wandered into the year 1955. "Fanny has doubts about whether all the comforts of 1955 are really such a good thing," says Landman. "The other two women are very excited about it, but Fanny is the most Victo- rian." The play was written by Eric Overmyer, and the cast is comprised of three women and one man who plays all of the people that the explor- ers meet throughout their journey - from a yeti (an abominable snowman), to Mr. Coffee, to an omnipotent guru type of character. As the afore- mentioned character names hint, this is a "light and funny play," says managing director Linda Kendall. "We didn't want to put on a psychologically draining play in the deep, dark month of January." The focal year of the play, 1955, wasn't cho- sen because there was something wrong with it, but rather because it was a year that shared a lot of similarities with 1888, explains Landman. Landman believes that both years were times of certainty. "There was a lot of exploration and scientific innovation. People felt that science could solve things. There was a lot of hope and promise." On the Verge is not a didactic play about the problems of the 20th century, but rather one about the courage and imagination of three women as they encounter strange adventures in the future. The character Fanny sums up the ex- perience by saying at one point in the play, "I have seen the future and it is slang." ON THE VERGE will be performed at th Per- formance Network tonight through Saturday at 8 p.m. and Sunday at 6:30 p.m. Admission is $6 for students and seniors, $8 general admission. If you want to know more about your inner being, you can explore your subconscious visually in the new Surrealist Print exhibit at the Uni- versity's Museum of Art. Surrealism, which began initially as a literary movement in the 1920's, is based on Freudian principles. Sur- realists attempt to materialize the ir- rational and actual processes of thought, and explore fantasy and imagination. The exhibit includes the prints of prominent Surrealists such as Max See Prints, Page 8, one of the prints featured in exhibit.
