Veterinary and medical specialists at Sea World in Orlando, Fla., lift Brydie, a 22-foot-long
whale, from one of the holding tanks at Sea World. The whale, which was found beached in
November, will be released into the Gulf of Mexico.

good, the tape concludes with a dra-
matic rush of pictures at the end of
the dogfight - when the last Libyan
MiG is suddenly within visual
range.
The tape shows the lead F-14
struggling to line up a firing posi-
tion behind the MiG-23, finally
succeeding in getting a tone alert for
his Sidewinder missile that allows
him to fire.
Pentagon officials, after unveiling
I ie cockpit tape, announced they
were also releasing a still picture
,taken from the video tape to prove
the Libyan MiG-23 Flogger jets
were armed. Libya had claimed on
Wednesday after the confrontation
the United States shot down two
unarmed reconnaissance jets.
The audio portion of the cockpit
tape is about 7-1/2 minutes in
length, while the video portion is
less than 30 seconds. The audio por-
tion shows that early on in the con-
frontation, the American aviators
became concerned about the Libyans'
intent.
After the second attempt to ma-
neuver away from the MiG-23's, the
F-14's go to a "Warning yellow.

intermediate state in the process of
preparing to fire in self defense.
Shortly thereafter, the Americans
again try to maneuver away.
"Bogies have jinked back into me
now, for the third time, noses on, at
35 miles. Angels 7," the lead pilot
reports.
Angels 7 means the plane's alti-
tude is 7,000 feet.
At 27 miles apart, the F-14's try
again and again, their manuevers are
matched by the Libyans.
Then, after a fifth evasive
maneuver: "Bogies have jinked back
at me again for the fifth time.
They're on my nose now, inside of
20 miles."

At this point, the lead aircraft
commander decides to defend him-
self.
"Master Arm On," he says,
"Master Arm On. Centering Up the
T. Bogies have jinked back into me
again. Sixteen miles. Centering the
Dot."
The phrases "centering up the T"
and "centering the dot" refer to the
use of a cockpit steering cue to en-
sure an optimum missile launch po-
sition. When ready, the pilot calls
out "Fox 1" when he fires a Sparrow
missile and "Fox 2" when he fires a
Sidewinder.
"Fourteen miles. Fox 1. Fox 1."
At this point the backseat radar

weapons officer can be heard saying
"Aw.Jesus."
"Ten miles, He's back on my
nose. Fox 1 again," the pilot calls
out.
"Six miles. Six miles."
Then another voice - again ap-
parently the backseat weapons officer
can be heard saying, "Tally Two.
Tally Two," meaning the two
Libyans have just come into visual
sight.
The pilot of the F-14 then says.
"Five miles. Four miles."
The second F-14 flying as wing
then fires a Sparrow and the weapons
officer in the lead F-14 reports to his
pilot, "Okay, he's goat a missile

off."
At this point, it becomes almost
impossible to determine who is
talking at each point, but the tape
continues:
"Good hit. Good hit on 1."
"Roger that. Good kill. Good
kill."
"I've got the other one."
"Select Fox 2. Select Fox 2."
"All right. Fox 2."
"All right. Fox 2."
"Those (expletive deleted)..."
"Shoot him."
"I don't got a tone."
"Lock him up. Lock him up."
"Shoot him. Fox 2."
"I can't. I don't have a tone."

At this point the lead F-14 suc-
ceeds in maneuvering behind thd
linking MiG and gets his missild
tone, firing the Sidewinder.
"Good kill. Good kill."
"Good kill."
"Pilot ejected."
"Okay... let's head north. Head
north."
"Let's go down low, on the deck.'
Unload. 500 knots. Let's get out of
here."
"We're showing two good chutes
in the air here."
Then in a report back to the car-
rier: "Roger. Two Floggers. Two
Floggers splashed. We're heading
