Synchronized Swimming Michigan Invitational Saturday, 1 p.m. CCRB The Michigan Daily 0 Frieder fretting jibout *Badgers tY JULIE HOLLMAN The road is a treacherous place to be if you are a Big Ten basketball eam. The unexpected can happen at any time in foreign territory. When Michigan plays the University of Wisconsin in Madison tomorrow (4 p.m.), the Wolverines will be looking for their first Big Ten road win and a chance to establish dominance outside of Crisler Arena. But just because the Badgers are a lower-half conference team, does not mean they won't give Michigan a ferocious territorial battle. "I think Wisconsin is very typical *of the so called bottom teams in the league this year. They are much, much better," Michigan coach Bill Frieder said. "Wisconsin is an outstanding basketball team and one that is just on the verge of beating anybody at any time. "We have already gone into strong, strong preparation and we are going to put more emphasis on Wisconsin than we did on Ohio A State because we want our kids to understand the importance of this ,game. We expect a tough, tough "basketball game," he continued. THREE PLAYERS who 'ould damage the Wolverines are ,forwards Danny Jones and Kurt J'ortmann, and All-American guard candidate Trent Jackson. The Wolverines 0-4 start in the Big Ten represents coach Bud VanDeWege's worst start in conference play since he began at Michigan five years ago. The coach still believes that his team can produce at least a couple points of light in what has been a hazy season for his club. "This weekend, we are in a must- win situation," VanDeWege said. "After an 0-4 start, anytime you have a close matchup you've got to win. Northwestern and Wisconsin are in similar situations and must feel the same way." SINCE the beginning of the season, the Wildcats (5-7 overall, 1-2 in the Big Ten) have lost five players from their roster. The team's second- leading scorer last season, guard Kelly Cole, will miss the remainder of the season (stress fracture), and newcomer-of-the-year candidate Michele Savage, the team's leader in scoring and rebounds is academically Spicer ineligibe. "We've both started out worse than we thought," said VanDeWege when comparing his team to the Wildcats, "and we're going with lineups we didn't expect." Northwestern coach Don Perrelli would not comment on the loss of Savage, preferring to focus on the remaining players he'll send out to play Michigan. "As a team, we are playing as well as we have all season," Perrelli See Cagers, Page 10 JESSICA GREENE/Dolly Michigan coach Bill Frieder spells out the game plan in recent Wolverine action. He will need big performances out of both Glen Rice and Rumeal Robinson to beat the Wisconsin Badgers in a game tomorrow afternoon. Jackson was third in the Big Ten in scoring with 19.3 points per game. He is a threat to score from anywhere on the floor but he must be aggressive in order to be effective. "Trent is a marked man for us this year," Wisconsin coach Steve Yoder said. "Sometimes he doesn't let the game come to him and he forces some things. But when he does let the game come to him, I think he's a very good player." The improved play of Jones and Portmann in the front court will be matched against the heightened productivity and aggressiveness of Michigan's Terry Mills and Loy Vaught. Both Vaught and Mills are coming off one of the best games of their careers against Ohio State last Monday. Against the Buckeyes, Mills reacted to the pleas of the Michigan coaches to establish his inside game. Mills finished the game with a career-high 23 points. Vaught also showed some new-found intensity after Frieder assured the junior forward following the Illinois game that he was going to start him and give him more than a one-game chance to prove himself. "Loy will readily admit that his biggest problem is staying motivated. But I think we've turned the corner. I was glad to see the way he responded against Ohio State," Frieder said. "I'm keeping after him and I think that he's starting to mature. He's staying alert out there." Vaught ended the Ohio St. game with 22 points and currently leads the country in field-goal percentage with 73.9 percent. Michigan will most likely keep the same starting five of Vaught, Mills, Glen Rice, Rumeal Robinson, and Sean Higgins against Wisconsin. The Wolverines have used a different starting lineup in the last seven games. But now, with the recent emergence of Mills and Vaught, Frieder sees no reason to change. 183-1107 AUDIT*IONS All Talent Welcome Comedy, Drama, Musical, Dance January 22 and 23 * IM' to swim in friendly waters this weekend rp AITI1 7m, kro BY JAY MOSES Sometimes, a friendly face is a welcome sight. The Michigan womens swimming team, coming off a humbling experience at the Longhorn Invitational in Texas, faces amiable foe Eastern Michigan .Saturday at 2:00 at the Canham Natatorium. "This is not a high-pressure meet," Michigan head coach Jim Richardson said. "But we both have some goals in mind, some things ,we'd like to see." Even the coaches are friendly. y. MU coach Margo Mahoney worked with the Michigan staff at Club Wolverine, the Wolverines' summer training program. "We're very good friends," :Richardson said. "She knows our swimmers very well, and we know her' s." While Richardson concedes that "the Hurons will not be Michigan's 1 toughest competition, he sees the K meet as another important step in accomplishing the Wolverines' goals 7 for the season. "Every time you get up there is a ;chance to try and develop and work toward what you want to do by the end of the season," Richardson said. EECTA lEL ETON Both teams will move some swimmers into off events to make the races closer. The Wolverines expect to be challenged by first-year swimmers Melanie Nelson (breaststroke) and Nicole Ray (distance). Michigan is in the midst of its most rigorous part of the season. "The intensity in the workouts is increasing," Richardson said. All sights are set on the Big Ten championships next month here in Ann Arbor. Next week the Wolverines will start resting in preparation. But first, there is Eastern Michigan to deal with. And, friendly or not, come Saturday, the Hurons are the rivals.
