The tal- ents of the school's students have yet to be col- lectively captured on vinyl, but they can be wit- nessed live tonight at the annual Collage Con- cert. The hour-long concert, which features dis- parate pieces performed in rapid-fire succession, promises to be fast-paced. The wide variety of selections will be performed with one intermis- sion and no other breaks in between. The grab bag of musical treats includes: The Music Man and Mozart; The Bartered Bride and Concert has it all. bagpipes; Otello and orchestra as well as pieces for choir, percussion and a jazz ensemble with a light show to boot. The theme of the concert is juxtaposition, and the selections will be se- quenced accordingly. New pieces will follow old, soloists will follow large ensembles and dynam- ics will be contrasted as well. The University Symphony Orchestra, Sym- phony Band, University and Chamber Choirs, Jazz Band and selected soloists will all be fea- tured. The Hill Auditorium stage will be extended so all the students can appear at once. According to School of Music information officer Doris Humphrey, past audiences have been overwhelmingly pleased with Collage, now in its 12th year. However, warns Humphrey, students who are up for such fast-paced excitement should be at Hill when the doors open at 7:55. The concert is held in conjunction with the Midwestern Confers ence on School Vocal and Instrumental Music and those attending the conference will receive priority seating. "I was told that about 600 people were turned away last year," said Humphrey. A few years ago, Liv- ing resurfaced, and it's good to have it back. Based on Ayn Rand's autobio- graphical first novel, We The Living is a story about life during the Rus- sian revolution. It is an Italian film with English subtitles, and the printed matter, such as newspaper headlines, is shown first in Russian and then dissolves to the Italian translation. This conglomeration is somewhat unorthodox, but it serves as a reminder that the theme of the film concerns people from all over the world. Rand is the founder of the philosophy known as Objectivism, which holds "that reason is man's only means of perceiving reality and his only guide to action." And rea- son is the driving force behind the lead character in the film, Kira, played by Alida Valli, who also starred in the American classic The Third Man. Kira is a student at the technical institute at Petrograd, and has dreams of becoming an engineer. But she is forced to learn the difference between dreams and reality. Her lover, Leo (Rossano Brazzi), is a member of the counter-revolution, which drags her into the political struggle of the times. And one of the more powerful men in the opposing, and ruling, faction, Andrei, falls in love with Kira. Balancing the two men is no mean feat, especially because she is interested in Andrei solely for his influence in the Communist party which, for her sake, Andrei uses to aid Leo. Each of these three characters have varying motivations for their actions, but all of them stem from both love and reason, which may sound like an unusual combination, but they are naturally connected in Rand's philosophy. In her words,1 "Existence exists - and the act of+ grasping that statement implies two corollary axioms: that something exists which one perceives and that one exists possessing consciousness, consciousness being the faculty of perceiving that which exists." The reality that exists to Kira is not nec- essarily to her liking, but reason leads her to accept that reality.
