The Michigan Daily - Wednesday, January 18, 1989 - Page 9 XWoo-woo!: Ickey and Boomer making football fun "All right, Boomer. I'm going to the Johnson's house, around the Smith's car and then between the two trees on the Williams' lawn for abutton hook. Hit me there, OK?" No way, Ickey. I want you to go long. You know that you can beat Shorty and Boom-Boom deep." The above could happen in any number of children's lives, but happens to be currently transpiring ii the NFL. The Cincinnati Bengals 01hve brought... (silence, gasp)... fun back to the game of football. , The Bengals two best offensive Adam S Rib BY ADAM SCHRAGER players are quarterback Norman "Boomer" Esiason and running back Elbert "Ickey" Woods. Just the thought of these names has visions of Archie comic strips and every kid's afternoon neighborhood foot- ball games strewn throughout my mind. Esiason has emerged this season to become the league's best quarter- back, while the rookie Woods from UNLV scored a league-tying 15 touchdowns. In his success, Woods has developed a touchdown dance known to all as the "Ickey Shuffle. Because the NFL forbids post- scoring celebration, an entirely separate reprehensible issue, Woods has been relegated to do his stomping behind the Bengal bench. Woods' shuffle has striking simi- larities to a Sumo wrestler's prepa- ration with the ritual salt before a match. Is there a connev ion'? If hairstyle comes into question, then Woods could be in deep trouble because the porgytail th'danigcls from his head is very similar to the Sumo-do. After Woods performs his dance, which has become as habitual following one of his touchdowns as plac ing Rice on Roni, the rest of the B:.ngals Join in for the "Woo, Woo" tnant The "Woo, Woo" cheer ,d Nlii be cotnluscd with Stevie Nicks' lyrics "Ooo, Ooo" in her latest pop music single "Every- where." lie Bengals have the right mgredients to win the Super Bowl }Ver the San Francisco 49ers because they have fun playing football. Remember back in 1985, when the Chicago Bears brought someone by the name of William "the Refrig- crator" Perry into football. Everyone always said that Perry made overweight people in America feel good because they now had a Successful, yet overwhelming, role itodel. Well, if this holds true, then all those people out there stuck with a childhood nickname they cannot shirk, can revel in the positive publicity that these gentlemen are receiving. It actually goes further than Boomer and Ickey. The Bengals have prototype offensive linemen names in Max (Montoya) and Anthony (Munoz), and vintage defensive names in Solomon (Wilcots) and Lewis (Billups). Compare that to the 49ers' top guns' names in Joe (Montana), Jerry (Rice), and Roger (Craig) and San Francisco does not have a chance. Maybe if the last name counted... Just saying the Bengals' names makes one laugh. And just watching them do their thing makes people smile because if nothing else comes from the Super Bowl, the Bengals will have fun. Isn't that what the game is about? So when Sunday arrives at Joe Robbie Stadium in Miami, don't be surprised to see Boomer and Ickey in the backfield, Max and Anthony on the line, and Solomon and Lewis on the sideline. Boomer will call an offensive play except something will be different. You won't see Boomer drawing out plays sent in from the press box on the sideline, but instead in the grass. Associated Press Ickey Woods (middle), the Cincinnati Bengals rookie running back and, from left, Lewis Billups, David Fulcher, Woods, Solomon Wilcots, and Eric Thomas do "The Ickey Shuffle" down in Miami during Super Bowl XXIII's media day. Woods will look to lead the Bengals running game against San Francisco Sunday in Super Bowl XXIII. HOMESTYLE SOUPS - AND SANDWICHES SPECIALS ARE $3.25 TUESDAY-FRIDAY 338 S.
