Student-run journals fill void ... Two new
journals, Leg Magazine and Modern Times, have recently
joined the group of publications at Columbia U., N.Y. Leg
Magazine, a humor journal, is described by co-founder and
Senior Editor Bill Syken as being "on the cutting-edge of
nothing at all." "A Home Video Guide to Paranoid Films" is
among the articles in the magazine's second issue. The
Ferris Hall Student Activities Office has only allotted $50
for Leg Magazine. Modern Times focuses on campus
issues, such as Asian Americans in higher education, and
on community issues. "One important aspect is that Col-
umbia University is very isolated from the community,
other campuses and the city. No one knows what's going
on. We might as well not be in New York City," said one
founder, Dave Cutler. "We are quite enthusiastic to fill in

Sham divestment ... Although Oberlin College
met its Junu divestment deadline in accordance with last
year's trustee guidelines, some students are calling the
procedure a "public relations scam." Senior Patrick
Budhoo said the college remains invested in companies
which disinvest formally, and then enter into other agree-
ments, such as licensing and franchising, with fully-
operating South African companies. According to Budhoo,
IBM Corporation is one company which officially disin-
vested from its South African business but assisted in the
creation of the new franchise company called IBM South
Africa. "Since IBM can say it's no longer in South Africa,
Oberlin can remain invested . . . but IBM is still having a
negative impact on the blacks in South Africa," senior Tim
Lewis said. Budhoo said of the college's continued in-
volvement, "It's a matter of not wishing to enforce a

Police Chief James LaPaglia
Campus distributes crime stats ... The
state of Pennsylvania passed a law last March requiring
colleges and universities to report crime statistics on
campus to ali students, employees and applicants. The law,
known as the College and University Security Information
Act, was passed after the April 5, 1986 rape and murder of
Jeanne Clery, a Lehigh U., Pa. freshman. After her death,
Clery's parents campaigned to make students and their
parents more aware of security issues on campuses. The
reports, which must be completed by November 26, will be
updated and distributed yearly to students, campus em-
ployees and admission applicants upon request. The re-
ports must give crime statistics and rates for the last three
years. "It's a shame it took this incident (the Clery murder)
to bring this particular act about," said Carnegie Mellon

Group aims to curb homophobia ... The
Gay Lesbian Bisexual Alliance (GLBA) at U. of Vermont
serves as an educational/awareness group as well as a
support group. Past and present acts of homophobia
strengthen the group's sense of purpose. Such acts include
slogans like "Stop AIDS, Kill Gays," and "Drink beers, kill
queers." Fraternities Sigma Phi Epsilon and Lambda Iota
were responsible for promoting homophobic slogans and
were consequently required to attend mandatory work-
shops about homophobia, prejudice and oppression. Inci-
dents alleged to have occurred recently include the defac-
ing of two GLBA posters. One was marked with a black
swastika and the other with the statement "God hates you."
One of the 10 members of GLBA said, "We hope that these
homophobic events taking place on the UVM campus will
kick the gay students out of their complacency and empow-
er them to take a stronger part in the GLBA and its fight for
