How could he not? His team improved its record to 6-0, and had fun doing it. At times, it looked like more of a highlight film than a real game. Glen Rice scored a season-high 29 points, and grabbed eight rebounds. Point guard Rumeal Robinson totaled 18 points and eight assists. Loy Vaught and Sean Higgins chipped in with 17 and 16 points respectively. BUT Tampa did provide some drama early on, trailing 27-22 midway through the first half. The Spartans managed only six more points the rest of the half, however, as the Wolverines took control. "They presented some problems to us early," Frieder said. "They really made us execute out there." Indeed, Michigan could manage just a 15-13 halftime rebounding edge over their Division II foes. "It was a very physical game," Rice said. "They had a couple of guys.willing to get in there and bang." Center Michael Stiglich, 6-foot-6, 235-pounds, was particularly aggressive, hounding the Wolverine front- line throughout the game. H IG G IN S said: "(Stiglich) looked like Hulk Hogan...and he was mean." But the Wolverines got back on track in the second half, opening up a 35-point lead when Rice stole an errant Tampa pass and took it length of the court for a ferocious slam right over Spartan forward Terry Rupp. "Once I stole it, I had my mind made up that I was going to dunk it," said Rice. "That guy (Rupp) was just in the way." Michigan outscored Tampa 17 to four to open the second half, but the Spartans reeled off ten straight points to keep it close. In spite of the lopsided score, Spartan forward Bryan Williams wasn't very impressed with the Wolverines. "They weren't very disciplined," he said. "I thought they'd be more competitive than they were." _- _ + I'.' .tI. ' 'r , t.+ / I ''" ('/ SI r. ~i .. Western plays the same kind of rugged game that Szczechowski does. The Broncos strong backcourt of Marti Davis, RuthAnne Wisniew- ski, and Jenny Malinowski drive to the basket without reservation, and create chances for others as well. This style of play challenges Szczechowski and the high-scoring backcourt partner, Tempie Brown. "We need to execute offen- sively," VanDeWege said. "Had we been able to do that down the stretch against Central, we could have held them off." No one is looking more forward to tonight than junior Tanya Powell. An Academic All-Big Ten selection last year, Powell began the last two games on the bench, after she was late for a team meeting. Her return to the starting lineup should improve the Wolverines shaky rebounding. "Tanya is about as solid an individual as you can have on a team," VanDeWege said. "She should be starting. She is the best rebounder we have from either standpoint." 7j~ir~tdata Systems THE QUALITY GOES IN BEFORE THE NAME GOES ON For more information about ,N/r 's full range of computers from the 8088 desktops, 286 desktops, 386 desktops, contact: Computing Resource Center 3113 School of Education 764-5356 Monday-Friday 9am-5pm We just made it even harder to resist a Big Mac Attack .
