"They needed to prove that they were ranked what they were," Michigan's Stefanie Liebner said. "You're not going to come all the way out here to fool around." Arizona State's 794 points easily outdistanced Tennessee (725) and Michigan (622). Northwestern, Colorado State and Eastern Michigan rounded out the field. Michigan's strongest performance came in the diving competition, where senior Clara Trammell swept the one-, three-, and ten-meter events. Amy Hansen finished second in the one- and three-meter competitions. Michigan head coach Jim Richardson had hoped his team would finish higher, but was still able to put the meet into perspective. "We rested a little bit, but not enough to swim really fast," Richardson said. "I was kind of hoping that some of our swims would be a little faster, but I can't be disappointed when you think of how close we're coming to NCAA times. Liebner qualified for the NCAA championships with a second-place time of 16 minutes 36.54 seconds in the 1650-yard freestyle. Teammate Gwen DeMaat picked up third in 16:42.71. In the 500 freestyle, DeMaat's 4:49.84 took second, while Liebner (4:54.13) finished third. DeMaat also qualified for the NCAA championships with a second-place time of 4:23.86 in the 400 individual medley. "The pressure's kind of off," DeMaat said about her qualifying time. "But I should have been going as fast as they (Arizona State) were." Michigan's Ann Colloton, who placed third in the 100 and 200 breastroke, also expected the team to swim better than it did. "The competition is a lot tougher than it usually is," she said. "After the first few events, we usually know we're going to win." Perhaps Liebner summed up the outcome of the meet the best. "I think it's exactly what we need right now. We have to see that we can't just float on our past successes." Jfw z,/-& -9Zaa
