.Tournament madness is here. This weekend, six'women's swimming
teams from around the country will follow the road to Ann Arbor to
participate in the first Michigan Invitational. Two of them, 'Arizona
State and Tennessee are ranked ahead of the undefeated Wolverines in
national polls.
There may not be any official scoring in the meet. And it's probably
true that the results of this meet will not have any large implications
on the rest of the season, but the meet is sure to be competitive.
"This is going to be one of the top invitationals in the country this
year," said Michigan head coach Jim Richardson. "There has never been
' an invitational this fast in 'the Midwest." ' - 2
... In addition 'to Arizond State (No.6), Tennessee '(No. 7),: and ,
Michigain, Northwestern (No.17) and Colorado State (No. 24) are other
4teams ranked in the top 25 nationally. Eastern Michigan rounds out the

Despitej'the quality'of the field, Richardson is taking a laid-back
.approach to the meet. Although he will be interested to see how
Stephanie Liebner, Gwen DeMaat, Susie Rabiah and other Wolverines
"ready to swim fast," perform at the meet, it is not his main concern.
- His decision to schedule the invitational centered around one purpose -
to give his team some top-flight national competition before the Big
Ten and NCAA meeets.
Liebner, though, one of the team's most consistent performers, is
xing more at the speed aspect of the meet. She said the team, having
developed a broad base of endurance throughout the season, has worked
recently on building its speed.
"Speed was a real factor and we concentrated on it all week. We have
more of it now than we have had all semester," said Liebner. "The
major thing is to swim well and get our times down."
Liebner said the meet provides an excellent arena to post qhalifying
times for the NCAA championships.
