Men's Basketball vs. Grambling State Tonight, 7:30 p.m. Crisler Arena SP ORTS Men's and Women's swimming Michigan Invitational Today - Sunday Canham Natatorium . The Michigan Daily Friday, December 2, 1988 Page 17 Home ho 'M' shoots down Rockets, 85-75 BY LORY KNAPP It wasn't pretty, but it was a win. The University of Michigan women's basketball team defeated the University of Toledo in their season opener last night, 85-75. But don't let the 10-point margin fool you, the game was a lot closer than it should have been. The Wolverines were up by 14 points with four minutes left, but they let the Rockets back into the game. Toledo cut the Michigan lead to six with just under a minute to play. "We should have blown them away, but we let them back in," said starting forward Leslie Spicer. "When we got a comfortable lead, we didn't keep putting the heat on." SPICER STARTED the game in place of Tanya Powell who was prevented from starting due to disciplinary reasons. Spicer had 10 points and four steals. Junior guard Tempie Brown led Michigan in scoring with 26 points, including nine for 10 from the charity stripe. Brown also led the Michigan 10-point scoring run that sparked the first half. Senior forward Lorea Feldman blocked a Toledo shot that Brown converted into two quick points. Three minutes later, Michigan was up, 29- 17, never to trail again. Center Mary Rosowski came off the bench for Michigan to put in 12 points, shooting six for seven from the field. Rosowski also contributed six rebounds to the effort. "Mary did it again, she continues to amaze me," said head coach Bud VanDeWege. Even with Rosowski's contribution, the Wolverines were out-rebounded, 45-37. "That (rebounding) is my number one concern without anything else being a close second," said VanDewege. "The teams in the Big Ten are bigger and deeper and if we don't rebound better, we're going to have some problems." GUARD CAROL SZCZECHOWSKI helped keep Michigan ahead when Toledo made its final surge. Szczechowski was fouled three straight times down the court, and hit all six of her free throws. Earlier in the game, Szczechowski missed her first free throw but received inspiration from the crowd. "I heard my uncle yelling in the stands, so how could I miss," said Szczechowski. VanDeWege said: "Carol's on the floor, she's coming up with those loose balls and she's getting those steals," Although happy about the victory, VanDeWege was not pleased with his team' play in the final minutes. "I'm very concerned that we let them back in the game," said VanDeWege. "There were some anxious moments in the last two minutes and I give Toledo a great deal of credit for their fight." Toledo's effort was led by its bench. Kim Sekulski led the Rockets with 18 bench points. Kelly Savage and Dee Hayes, both came off the bench to score 17 points for the Rockets. Savages' points included two, three-pointers and nine free- throws. Yzerman named NHL Player of the Month ops: for openers... Men face first of lightweights BY JULIE HOLLMAN Cuddle up with a nice warm blanket. It's time for the same ole December bedtime story. With the winter flurries comes the saga of mighty Michigan crushing any small school brave enough to enter Crisler Arena. This year's tall tale starts with the Wolverines opening their regular season home schedule with Gram- bling State University and South Dakota State. Grambling St. will try its luck against the Big Ten giant Friday night at 7:30, and then South Dakota will attempt to gain some respect for the little guys, Saturday at 2:00. "People complain about the schedule, but you need games like these," said Michigan coach Bill Frieder. "Without them you can't get through the school year academically or athletically." EVEN SO, the Wolverines will probably come out of the weekend looking like an electrolux sucking up a defenseless rug. Michigan is coming off of a championship performance at the Maui Classic which included a win over Oklahoma, a top ten team in all major polls. The Wolverines emerged from Hawaii ranked No. 2 Moreover, the emergence of sophomore Kirk Taylor may have put Frieder's guard worries to rest. The only problem Michigan faced from its island trip was 'the flight home. The Wolverines are still trying to readjust to Ann Arbor time. The Tigers from Grambling, LA. sound like a worthy opponent who could claw away at a tired Wolverine team, but they will have to take advantage of more than Michigan's jet lag. CAPITALIZING on a Mich- igan weakness, however, won't be such an easy order for an inexperienced Tiger squad. Grambling only has five returning letterwinners. In order to have a chance at Crisler Arena, 'the Tigers will need a productive game from their All- Southwestern Athletic Conference forward Terry Wesley. Last season, Wesley averaged 12.9 points and 6.3 rebounds per game. So far though, he is yet to show his past prowess. Last Monday, Wesley only scored four points and grabbed just two rebounds in 31 minutes of play against St. Louis. The Jackrabbits of South Dakdta, whose homesterritory is Frost Arena, fit into the story well as the sweet innocent animal that falls prey to'the abominable snowman. The Wolv- erines will play strong, solid basketball and crush the Division II jackrabbits, or else they will play poor, sloppy ball and crush South Dakota. "Michigan is the toughest com- petion we've ever faced." said jackrabbit coach Jim Thorson. "It's kind of perplexing what you can do to slow down a team like this. You can't commit to one or two players because (Michigan) is so balanced." To make matters worse, South Dakota lost its top player with an injury. Randy Suarez, who averaged 13.4 points per game last year is out with a shoulder injury. ROBINLOZNAK/Daily Michigan forward Lorea Feldman, scored 11 points and grabbed eight rebounds in the Wolverines' victory over Toledo last night at Crisler Arena. MONTREAL (AP)- Detroit Red Wings center Steve Yzerman, who had 17 goals and 13 assists in 13 games was named Thursday as NHL Player of the Month for November. With at least one point in each of Detroit's 13 games, Yzerman edged out Wayne Gretzky and Bernie Nicholls - both centers with the Los Angeles Kings, and Calgary Flames goalie Mke Vernon. Gretzky led all NHL scorers with 31 points in 14 games while Nicholls had 17 goals and 13 assists in 14 games. Vernon won all seven of his games compiling a 1.85 goals-against average. Yzerman had 10 Iwo-or-more point games in November: five three- point games and a four-point game on Nov. 29 against the New York Islanders.
