bers. Dial some more numbers, and some more after
that. Listen. Hang up.
You've just registered for next term's classes.
Within 10 years, University students will no longer
have to wait in line in the stuffy basement of Angell
Hall or in the Chrysler Center to register for classes.
By then, University officials expect to have a phone
system tied into the existing computer registration sys-
tem.
"Phone registration and on-line terminals will be
standard in 10 years" at U.S. universities, said Associ-
ate Registrar Douglas Woolley. Students will be able to
register themselves for classes instead of going to a
central site, he said.
The University of Georgia at Athens, which has a
system similar to CRISP, is also considering a com-
bined phone and on-line registration system, said Dan
Stuart, assistant registrar for scheduling and registra-
tion, primarily for "the convenience of the student."
Some computer terminals will be kept, Stuart said,
because some students prefer to work with people
"eyeball to eyeball."
In the Big Ten, Ohio St., Indiana, and Wisconsin
have already begun using phone registration, Woolley
said. Northwestern will start in a year, and the other
schools are all considering the switch, he said.
Students at Ferris State University, in Big Rapids,
Mich., began phone registration over a year ago. Using
a touchtone phone, students dial the access number,

their identification number, an individual code number,
and course numbers. If all lines are full, the caller hears
a busy signal.
A computer tells the caller what classes they are
registered for and what classes are closed. It can search
for open sections, and will refuse to let students regis-
ter if they owe fines, said Roberta Sonnenberg, the su-
pervisor of registration at FSU. Students can also drop
and add classes for the first two days of the term, she
said.
Students at Ferris St. are assigned a day, based on
the number of credit hours they have, when they can
begin calling, Sonnenberg said. The computers and
phones open at 3 a.m., which is usually the busiest
time, she added.
Ferris St. has had very few problems with the phone
registration, Sonnenberg said. About 90 percent of the
10,000 students registered by phone for the fall quarter,
and Ferris St. has not had many problems with tamper-
ing or with people altering other peoples' schedules.
Tampering has been "more prankish," she said.
Another potential problem of phone registration is
phone overload, where so many people call that the
lines break down. At Ferris St., Sonnenberg said that
with their 20 phone lines, they have had no problems.
Woolley said the University of Michigan would
probably need 48 phone lines.
As early as next semester, Woolley said software
should be in place to allow any student, via the MTS
computer network, to check on the number of spaces
available in classes before they register.
S udents will only be able to retrieve information,
how ver, and won't be able to register or put them-
sev-s on wait lists, Woolley said.
W ithin three to five years, he added, the University
should have programs to allow students to check their
current grades and transcripts through MTS.
