There's more to the Midwest than Dorothy & Toto and The Grapes of Wrath, and J. Parker
Copley has captured it in the dance work Heartland.

BY PAMELA WARSHAY
THIS weekend the J. Parker Copley Dance Com-
pany will present a full evening dance theater work
entitled Heartland at the Trueblood Theater. The
piece, a dance consisting 16 scenes, was inspired by
Copley's experience of living and dancing in the Mid-
and Southwest.
Copley started his training in San Francisco. He
held a scholarship with the San Francisco Ballet and

even while they endure the hardships and struggles of
life. Heartland also shows the realization that these
hardships and struggles will occur again through time
and future generations.
The choreography of Heartland consists of dance
theater and expressionistic movement. The movement
encompasses a pedestrian style and a technical dance
style.
The choreography and the music, "Appalachian
Spring," composed by Aaron Copland and performed
by the Jackson Symphony, make Heartland seem
romantic, but some of the images and ideas of this
piece aren't romantic at all. Heartland is a "romantic
piece but also deals with issues that are ugly," says
Copley. These images are not just shown through the
art of dance; Copley has incorporated video into
Heartland, including on-screen images of the assassi-
nation of John F. Kennedy and the Vietnam War.
Heartland is meant not just to make a statement to
the audience, but also to identify with each individual
watching the performance, as Heartland makes the
audience realize their own struggles and optimism
throughout life.
