Five 'M' players named to Ai-Big Ten first team CHICAGO (AP) - Indiana running back Anthony Thompson was named the Big Ten's most valuable player and was one of four Hoosiers named yesterday to the 1988 Associated Press all-conference football team. Defensive tackle Mark Messner of conference champion Michigan and offensive tackle Tony Mandarich of runner-up Michigan State were the only unanimous choices on the 24- man first team selected by a panel of 18 sportswriters and sportscasters. Thompson, who led the conference in rushing and ranked third nationally, was joined on the All-Big Ten team by Indiana guard Don Schrader, kicker Pete Stovanovich and defensive lineman Joe Huff. DEFENSIVE BACK Marc Foster of Purdue was the only choice from Purdue. He missed being a unanimous selection by one point. Iowa, which tied Illinois for third place, placed seven players on the first team. Michigan landed five players while Michigan State and fifth-place Indiana each picked up four spots. Illinois landed three players, all on the defensive unit, and the final spot went to Purdue. Minnesota, Northwestern, Ohio State and Wisconsin were shut out on the first team. Messner made the team for the fourth consecutive year, the only position player to achieve that feat, while Iowa defensive lineman Dave Haight made it for the third consecutive year. Tight end Mar Cook of Iowa, like Foster, missed being a unanimous first-team choice by one point. Thompson had 34 points. A first-place vote was worth two points and a second-place vote was worth one point. Ed Sutter, Northwestern's punter- linebacker, was named Freshman of the Year and was the second-team punter. ALSO NAMED to the first team on offense were wide receivers Andre Rison of Michigan State and Deven Harberts of Iowa, tackle Bob Kratch of Iowa, guard Mike Husar of Michigan, center John Vitale of Michigan, quarterback Chuck Hartlieb of Iowa and running back Tony Boles of Michigan. Mandarich, Cook, Husar, Hartlief and Vitale were repeaters from last year's team.. Joining Huff, Foster, Messner and Haight on the defensive unit were lineman Joe Mott of Iowa and Mo Gardner of Illinois, linebackers Percy Snow of Michigan State, Derrick Brownlow of Illinois and Brad Quast of Iowa and defensive backs Glen Cobb of Illinois and John Miller of Michigan State. Mike Gillette of Michigan was the punter. Snow was also a repeater on defense. Only four players received MVP votes. One panelist did not vote and another split his ballot, giving half a vote to Thompson, who finished with 7 1/2 votes, and the other half to Messner, who was second with 4 1/2 votes. " Mandarich got four votes for MVP. The other vote went to Illinois' Jeff George, the second- team quarterback. Michigan players who were named to the second team included wide receiver Greg McMurtry, kicker Gillette, defensive back David Arnold and linebacker J.J. Grant. Wide receiver John Kolesar, offensive lineman Greg Skrepenak, quarterback Michael Taylor, tight end Derrick Walker and defensive back Tripp Welborne all received honorable mention. 41 ' 1 I \ AIIIIII I %I ' l t 11' ,(ter. lS I / . - * 8088 processor " 8/4.77 MHz dual speed * 640K memory expandable to 1.64Mb with EMS 0 Dual 3.5" 720K floppy or 20Mb hard drive " 1 serial, parallel, RGB & numeric keypad port 0 5.25" floppy interface 0 10.5" diagonal backlit LCD Supertwist screen 0 Expansion chassis connector 0 Rechargeable-detachable battery " MS-DOS® included Dual floppy 20 Mb hard drive Prices start at Prices start at $1528.00 $2242.00 :11 i , It 1j' I;i'
