Second-ranked Southern Cal (10- 0), the Wolverines' Rose Bowl opponent, could take over the No. 1 position with a win Saturday over top-ranked Notre Dame at the Los Angeles Coliseum (3:30, ABC-TV). The Fighting Irish.(10-0) have held the No. 1 spot since defeating Miami (Fla.) four weeks ago. "I'm not rooting for either one, but it would be nice for (Southern Cal) to be No. 1 when we go in there," Michigan coach Bo Schembechler said Monday at his last weekly press luncheon of the year. The Wolverines (8-2-1) last met the Trojans in the 1979 Rose Bowl. Southern Cal defeated Michigan, 17- 10, earning a share of thenational championship with Alabama. The Trojans scored the eventual game-winning touchdown in the second quarter on Charles White's "Phantom Touchdown," a three-yard run in which he appeared to fumble the ball before he crossed the goal line. Schembechler called it "the Spencer made 14 tackles versus the Buckeyes, and he intercepted one pass. -Injury report: Fullback Chris- Horn and linebacker Brian Townsend suffered season-ending knee injuries against Ohio State. Linebacker John Milligan, who has missed the last four games with a sprained ankle,- will return for the Rose Bowl. -The Wolverines will begin practicing for the Rose Bowl on Dec. 16. They will take Dec. 23-25 off before leaving for Pasadena, Calif., on Dec. 26. CSecond-year Southern Cal coachl Larry Smith was an assistant un d w Schembechler at both Miami of Ohio (1967-68) and Michigan (1969-72). -Schembechler said he has not seen Southern Cal play much this"':' season. "I have only seen a dozen .or" so of their plays. But I hear they'We- pretty good." -Running backs Tony Boles and' Leroy Hoard both finished the season averaging 5.5 yards per carryts. Boles gained 1359 yards. 'That's not, bad for a sophomore," Schembechler said. Wrestlers start off slow- BY DAVID HYMAN The Michigan wrestling team competed this weekend in the Ohio Open, its first tournament of the season. The Wolverines failed to bring back memories of their '87-88 season, which saw them finish 6th at the NCAAs, but Michigan coach Dale Bahr isn't concerned. "Who ever remembers who won the Ohio Open at the end of the season," Bahr said. In this tournament, no team scores were kept as the winners were chosen on eight different criteria. Three- time All-American John Fisher at 134 pounds was the lone Wolverine winner, pinning Dan Willaman of Edinboro. MICHIGAN'S other three All-Americans, Joe Pantaleo (158), Mike Amine (167) and Larry Gotcher (142), did not fare as well as Fisher. The Wolverine's other upperclassman, Bob Potokar (heavyweight), did not perform well either, but Bahr is not worried. "Our veterans lost a couple of close matches, but they are the type who will be there when the important matches take place," Bahr said. Pantaleo lost in the semifinals to fifth ranked Joel Smith of Eastern Michigan, but came back to finish third. Amine also lost in the semifinals, but did not place. Gotcher moved up one weight class to 150. Because of a torn bicep muscle, he had not wrestled hard during the last three weeks. "He is looking to practice hard this week, after getting through the tournament in good shape," Bahr said. Despite the veterans not performing up to their potential, other weight classes looked good. "The other weight classes are impressing me," Bahr said. James Dye (177), Justin Spewock (177) and Phil Tomek (190) all turned in solid performances in Ohio. Dye placed fourth and had an excellent tournament, while his competitor for the 177 weight class, Spewock, wrestled only three rounds before dropping out with stretched ligaments in his knee. "He had injured it two weeks ago and we did not want to risk further injury," said Bahr. Tomek, a first year wrestler, was a pleasant surprise to Bahr, placing fifth this weekend. He is competing with Fritz Lehrke for the 190 weight class. "We are trying to develop our other weight classes," said Bahr, referring to those weights which are not held by the All-Americans. The improvement of these other weights will pose a formidable challenge to the top teams in the nation, due to the depth of the Wolverines at all the weights, not just the five upperclassmen. dumbest call I ever saw."
