w U U U U v a LEAGUE 'M', rest of conference sags behind Iowa, Ohio State Continued from Page 7 score points. Four of the Illini's new arrivals are over 6-foot; "We feel the key to our success is people keeping healthy and getting a tremendous contribution from the young players," said coach Laura Golden Minnesota has three outstanding players to lead its team, unfortu- nately they don't have much else. Lea Blackwell lacks the speed needed to outplay people, but the preseason second team All-Big Ten choice makes up for her lack of footwork by making smart decisions. Cindy Bradley is another guard who can help the Gophers, and sophomore Ellen Bradley will lead future Minnesota teams. "We are looking to finish seventh or eighth," said coach LaRue Fields. "We want to move up, but we want to make sure our foundation is a solid one." New Indiana coach Jim Izard has never had a losing season in seven seasons of coaching. Expect this to be his first, as he inherits a team ravaged by graduation. The new coach will have to teach his system and find the best players to run his game plan. Izard may eventually rely on guards Pam Fritz and Anne Mooney, but right now he doesn't know. "We haven't decided who our passers and shooters are yet," said Izard. "We hope we can solve things before the end of the season. I'd like to establish who our top eight players are by the first of the year." "This is a young and upcoming squad," said Wisconsin coach Mary Murphy. She isn't kidding, ten of the 12 players on her team are in their first or second year. "The returning players are looking forward to this year" said Murphy. "It's a new team and people are trying to build on what we have." What Murphy does have is 1987- 88 Newcomer-of-the-Year Kay Fredrickson. This 5-10 Guard/ Forward will take on a leadership role for the Badgers. As for this years' newcomers, Amy Bauer will contribute from the point guard.
