George Sanders and Marilyn Mon- roe are terrific, too. GIANT (George Stevens, 1956) 1429 Hill St. 7:00 This film is huge in every way. It stars Rock Hudson, Elizabeth Taylor, and James Dean in his last movie. It has a big mansion, lots of money, and lots of Texas oil. It lasts 200 minutes on screen and has been going strong for over 30 years. HOUR OF THE WOLF (Ingmar Bergam, 1967) MLB 4 7:00 Bergman's favorite actors, Liv Ullman and Max Von Sydow, star in this film about a painter who is terrorized by inner demons and his adulterous past. As with most of this revered director's films, this one is highly personal and gloomy. SHAME (Ingmar Bergman, 1968) MLB 4 8:45 Guess who stars in this Bergman film? You got it, Liv Ullman and Max Von Sydow. Still a heck of a trio. This time a married couple try to flee from the effects of war but come to learn that it is too big to escape. M (Fritz Lang, 1931) Nat Sci 7:30 Peter Lorre is a psychotic child murderer who has a penchant for whistling. He is brought to justice by the Berlin Underground, but Lang uses this as a metaphor for the power of the masses in Ger- many at the time. DIABOLIQUE (Henri-Georges Clouzot, 1955) Nat Sci 9:30 A thriller in the Vein of Hitch- cock. In this highly suspenseful film, a man and the woman he's been seeing murder his wife, dump her in the pool, and find that the body has swum away. SUNDAY KIND HEARTS AND CORONET'S (Robert Hamer, 1949) Michigan Theater 5:30 Alec Guiness plays most of a royal family that is being knocked off one by one in this zany comedy. Festivities actually start at 4:30 with a birthday party for Prince Charles and a series of short docu- mentaries. TUCKER: THE MAN AND HIS DREAM (Francis Ford Coppola, 1988) Michigan Theater 7:30 See Friday's listing. THE MAN WHO KNEW TOO MUCH (Alfred Hitchcock, 1934) MLB 4 7:00 Hitch later remade this film of his, but the original is still pretty strong. A couple on vacation in Switzerland accidently learn of a murder plot in their native London and subsequently their daughter is kidnapped by the villains: THE 39 STEPS (Alfred Hitchcock, 1935) MLB 4 8:40 The film that first brought Hitchcock international acclaim. Robert Donat is rudely awakened to watch a dead body fall on him. Afraid of being accused of the crime he follows the only lead he has to try and find the criminals. -Mark Shaiman M Ann Arbor Civic Theatre Main Tennessee Williams MENI Directed by Susan Morris Nov. 3, 4, 5, 10, 11, 12, 17, 18, 19, 1988 at 8:00 p.m. Tickets- $5.00 Thursday evenings 2-for-1 1035 S.
