The impact of the Asian-American experience is
found in The Essence of the Spirit art exhibit at the
Michigan Union Art Study Lounge. This new exhibit
includes the art works of several Asian-American
artists, trained in both traditional Asian and Western
artistic styles - evidenced by the strong fusion of
Eastern and Western cultures and ideologies that exist
within each art piece.
Eastern forces have influenced the Western art world
for centuries. For instance, the use of rapid
brushstrokes characteristic of ancient Oriental art was
adopted by 19th-century French Impressionist painters

such as Claude Monet. Both styles combine to create
an art in which Asian values of art, such as technique,
vitality, interplay of spaces, and the balance between
material presence and spirit of the artist, are integrated
with Western concepts of art.
The exhibit is sponsored by several organizations,
including the Minority Affairs Committee of MSA,
the School of Art, Michigan Union Arts and
Programming, and Minority Student Services. The
coordinator of the exhibit is Natasha Raymond, who is
an LSA senior majoring in art history, as well as an
artist participating in the exhibit.
The various forms of art in the exhibit include

pnotograpns, paintings, architecture, and cnarcoai
drawings and portraits. Artist Larry Lie's photograph of
the "Monkey King" represents an artist's exploration of
his inner self as an Asian American. Natasha
Raymond's paintings combine the aesthetic values of
German, Italian, Korean, and American traditions. The
simple beauty of Oriental brushwork is captured in
Myung Raymond's art. Meanwhile, a more modern
style is combined with traditional Asian elements in
the Cubist paintings of Hironao Sugiura. In addition,
the Kietha Series by Michele Ku portrays the lyrical,
flowing nature of Oriental art. Much diversity exists
among these works, as the artists examine themselves-
and their world as Asian Americans.

The Essence of the Spirit is an excellent
opportunity to learn more about the Asian-American
experience - it reflects the best of both worlds.
THE ESSENCE OF THE SPIRIT will be held at the
Michigan Union Art Study Lounge (first floor of the
Michigan Union) until November 22, at the Hospital
Ampitheater Lobby (second floor) from December S to
January 20, and at the Rackham Galleries (third floor)
from January 21 to February 14 ( 9 a.m.-10 p.m.
Monday-Friday and 10 a.m. -3 p.m. Saturday. For
