0 Women's Swimming UM Alumni Meet Today Canham Natatorium SPORTS The Michigan Daily ['RI Friday, November 4, 1988 ICERS HOPE TO Sfl Falcons n BY MIKE GILL These may be glory days for the Michigan hockey team, but not the "Glory Days" Bruce Springsteen sings about. The Wolverines are not ready to relax on their laurels. The Wolverines swept NCAA champion Lake Superior State last weekend. But they could care less - they've got a home-and-home series against Bowling Green this weekend. Michigan head coach Red Berenson stressed all week that what happened in the Sault was great, but it won't win any games in the future. "WE HAVE to get last week out of our systems," said Berenson. "It was a good week, a good experience, a good confidence builder, but if we keep thinking about it we'll be back to where we were two weeks ago (when the team managed only one of a possible four points against Illinois-Chicago.)" "We've got a new battle," said co-captain Myles O'Connor. "What happened has to be put behind us, and we need to build up for Friday." So the calendar turns, the wheels churn, and the Falcons roll into Yost Ice arena tonight for a 7:30 p.m. match. The two teams also meet Saturday, same time, at BGSU Ice Arena. Bowling Green (5-1-0 overall, 3-1 CCHA) is on a roll after sweeping last weekend's series with Western Michigan. They exhibit a finfesse yet rough brand of hockey. They have found success working the power play, currently leading the CCHIA with a 36.6% success rate. BERENSON, who has a 8-9 record against the Falcons in his career at Michigan, stated that when these two teams meet, they display an exciting brand of hockey with many scoring chances. "We've played them well even in years which we've not been as strong." Scoring chances? It could just be a barrage as swift as a machine gun in war due to "the showdown at center," * Men's Swimming Maize and Blue Intra Squad Today Canham Natatorium Poge 10 IKE BOWLING GREEN 4 ext feast? which matches the two captains of the respective teams, Bowling Green's Greg Park and the Wolverines' Todd Brost. They are tied for the lead in the league scoring race with 11 points apiece and should both spend a good part of the game squared off against each other. While Michigan's defensemen are "maturing"4 according to Berenson, O'Connor points to the Falcons r youthful backline. "We have to exploit their young defensemen. They have an inexperienced goalie and defenders. We should use that to our advantage." Blue Banter " Friday's game will be shown on tape delay beginning at 4 p.m. Saturday on PASS. " Michigan left wing Denny Felsner will return. to action this weekend. He sat out last weekend with a4 strained back. " While Michigan fans express amazement at the Lake lSuperior sweep in the upper peninsula Berenson expesses a different perspective. "(Our junior class) doesn't see it as a big accomplishment or a big obstacle like our seniors or graduates would." Those on the team for three years pulled a 3-2-1 record in Sault St. Marie, quite an improvement from the past. I In the KBJR coaches poll out of Duluth, MN, the Wolverines are ranked tenth. Minnesota is first. Other CCHA teams included are Michigan State (second), and Bowling Green (fourth.) Illinois-Chicago and Lake Superior also received votes. Minnesota was also top ranked in the WMEB-media poll from Orono, ME. Michigan was ranked 11th. Michigan State (second), Bowling Green (eighth), and Lake Superior (tenth) all were CCHA teams finishing in front of the Wolverines. " Wolverine backup goalie, first-year player Tim"- Keough, continues to develop. Sharples will continue to start, but Berenson hopes that Keough can slip into the 'action in the proper situation. J ; : WMichigan players Jim Ballantine (23) and Ryan Pardoski (16) shown here Chicago, will try to help the Wolverines capture first place in the CCHA J eaguae player-of-the-week Greg Parks and Bowling Green. The teams play w rena and Saturday in Bowling Green. Both games start at 7:30. ROBIN LOZNAK/Daily battling Illinois- as they take on tFriday at Yost Swimmers to show strokes before serious season starts BY ANDREW GOTTESMAN The 'men's swim team will get one last chance to relax and have some fun, before getting down to the serious business of defending its Big Ten championship, today during the annual Maize and Blue intrasquad swim meet. "It's. just a chance for the swimmers to see where they are," said assistant coach Dave Kerska. "It's more of a fun kind of thing." THE MEET which does not include a diving segment, will also mark the first competitive use of the Donald B. Canham Natatorium. The coaching staff hopes this will draw more people to the usually- sparsely-Attended event. "Maybe Canham will bring some more people down here," said head coach Jon Urbanchek. As for the meet itself, coaches and swimmers alike agree that it stresses competition less, and preparation more, than a regular meet would. "This will give us a chance to see what we have," Kerska said. "We can see what times they can do." The swimmers will get to swim their best events, regardless. of who will actually swim in the first real meet. Urbanchek said, "It helps everybody with their motivation," he said. IF ANY segment of the team stands to gain anything from the event, though, it seems to be the incoming first-year swimmers. "It means a little more for freshmen," said Eric Wunderlich, a first-year student and Olympic trial finalist in the 200-meter breast- stroke. "There's absolutely nothing to lose and it's our first chance to really swim at Michigan." Kerska also saw this enthu- siasm. "(The first-year swimmers) want to shine. They're a little more keyed up for their first meet. The seniors tend to be a little more laid back." But anybody who is at all laid back today, knows that this is the last chance to polish the skills before Bowling Green comes for the real thing on Tuesday. Klima coming back, to Wings, Probert to follow? Detroit (AP)-Petr Klima will be recalled from the American Hockey League and forward Bob Probert will receive a physical exam before the Detroit Red Wings decide to reinstate the suspended forward, the club announced yesterday.
