Women's Swimming UM Alumni Meet Friday "Canham Natatorium SPORTS Men's Swimming Maize and Blue Intra Squad Friday Canham Natatorium Pa9e 11 The Michigan Daily Wednesday, November 2, 1988 'M' boasi BY JEFF SHERAN It is rare that a Michigan team is blessed with the best player in the nation. Thanks to last week's events, the men's tennis team now * possesses such a rarity. Sophomore Malivai Washington led the Wolverines in a stellar display of tennis at the Volvo Championships in Athens, Georgia. He defeated Arkansas' Mike Brown, 7-6 (8-6), 7-6 (7- 4), in the tournament finals to capture the title. Washington won all five of his matches in straight sets en route to his win, five of the ten sets ending in a tiebreaker. Employing what Coach Brian Eisner referred to as "tremendous tennis concentration and focus," the sophomore star ascended to the championship from an unseeded position in the tournament. Previously ranked 29th in the nation, Washington will move up to the number one spot, in view of last week, and his performance in the Longhorn Invitational, which each year serves as a warmup for the Volvo Championships. He reached the finals of the Longhorn tournament in Austin, Texas. Eisner had only praise for Washington's performance, saying that his "mental toughness made the difference in this tournament." He battled his good friend, Brown for each crucial champ point, maintaining an immense desire throughout the match. "I concentrated well at the time," Washington said. "It was my tournament. This is one of my biggest accomplishments. It's a nice feeling to be (ranked) number one, but you can't relax - everyone is vying for position in the top 10, shooting for that top spot." Washington's performance in his first national tournament has earned him an automatic invitation to the next leg of collegiate tennis' Grand Slam, the National Clay Court See TENNIS, Page 12 Sago named top NL rookie. NEW YORK (AP) - Former Michigan player, Chris Sabo, who hit .271, with 11 homers and 44 runs batted in for the Cincinnati Reds, was named the Jackie Robinson National League Rookie of the Year yesterday. Sabo received 79 points and 11 first-place votes from a panel of 24 sports writers. First baseman Mark Grace of the Chicago Cubs was second with 61 points and Dodger pitcher Tim Belcher of the was third with 35. "I'd rather play for wins than personal awards and all that stuff," Sabo said during the season. The Reds finished second in the NL West for the fourth straight year. 'M' and BY JODI LEICHTMAN The sixth annual Michigan Baseball Fall Series earned the Gray team three wins to the Blue's one this weekend at Fisher Stadium. The scrimmage marked the end of fall training for the baseball team and the beginning of winter weight conditioning to prepare for the spring season. Saturday's games displayed the team's strong pitching and fielding abilities. In the opener of the four- game scrimmage, pitcher Mike Grimes hurled a 3-0 shutout for the Gray. Pitcher Tim Lata and the Blue team evened up the match with a 3-0 shutout in the second game of the series. SUNDAY'S games saw hitters take their turn in the spotlight. The 'M' hit diamond Gray team prevailed in both games,10-4 and 9-7. "The momentum was swinging back and forth. It just overpowered us at the end of each game," said first-year student Tim Flannely who played third base for the Blue. While assistant coaches Ted Mahan and John Young coached the Blue team, and Dick Grapenthin and Chuck Froning coached the Gray, Middaugh watched the game from the stands to achieve a general idea of where the team is at at this point. "I really don't pay that much attention to the scores," head coach Bud Middaugh said. "Sometimes the players show something in the game that's not seen in practice." "IT'S A NICE closing for the fall," Flannely said. "It's a way to compare who's playing well and who needs a little more work - a tool to judge how people respond." "I thought that as a team we made some key errors at key times." said sophomore David Everly. "At times, both teams lost their level of concentration, and that led to big innings for both teams but (on a positive note) we executed the hit and run pretty well." Michigan lost some key players following last season. "Whenever you lose people like that you're gonna hurt," said pitcher Jeff Tanderys who was on the disabled list for the series. But the team is maintaining a very positive outlook for the 1989 season. "This year's team is a lot closer," Tanderys added.
