Women's Swimming UM Alumni Meet Friday Canham Natatorium SPORTS Men's Swimming Maize and Blue Intra Squad Friday Canham Natatorium 4 The Michigan Daily Tuesday, November 1, 1988 Page9 Cross country finishes BY KAREN GROMALA It was cornfields, cross country, and conquest last weekend at the University of Iowa. The unranked Michigan women's cross- country team placed third behind Wisconsin and Indiana at the Big Ten championships held in Iowa City. The Wolverines beat nationally ranked Iowa and Minnesota. "We surprised a lot of people this weekend," said senior runner Ava Udvadia. "We were not expected to finish that well." MINDY ROWAND was the top Wolverine runner, finishing fourth with a time of 17 minutes, 25 seconds. Rowand earned a place on the All-Big Ten team for her efforts. "Everyone on our team ran really well," Rowand said. "We just clicked, while Iowa and Minnesota choked." Senior Traci Babcock also ran well. "She was the hero for the day," Michigan coach Sue Foster said. Babcock placed 15th with a time of 17:59 and broke a three-year Big Ten meet jinx. She has not run her up to her potential at previous Big Ten meets, especially last year's. "Last year I had heat exhaustion and crawled across the finish line," Babcock said. Udvadia and senior Carol Boyd also contributed to Michigan's fine showing at the meet. They placed 20th and 23rd, respectively. Junior Jennifer McPeck added a 25th-place finish. Michigan will compete in the district championships in two weeks with a field that includes front-runners Wisconsin and Indiana. "If Indiana has a bad day, we might be able to squeak in second," Foster said. Barquist leads men The Michigan men's cross-country team finished third just behind Wisconsin and Michigan State Saturday at the Big Ten championships. Indiana's Robert Kennedy broke the tape first followed by Michigan's Brad Barquist. "I was pleased," Barquist said. "It would always be nicer to win it than take second, but I was happy with the way I ran. John Scherer, who finished eighth overall, was Michigan's second runner across the line. He was followed by the Wolverines' Tony Carna (16th), Ryan Robinson (21st), and Jeff Barnett (26th). Michigan finished one point shy of Michigan State. WITH THE exception of their fifth runner who finished 32nd, "State ran really tight together as a team," said Barquist. "Wisconsin is always up front. They had six guys in the top 12 - that's pretty impressive." -Although the team was happy with third, they were disappointed that they missed second. "It was a bummer. We don't know where they came from," said Barnett. "It was tough. Everyone went out together and then broke apart quickly." Michigan coach Ron Warhurst said: "I was very pleased with Brad. He showed a lot of guts and ran the kind of race we wanted him to run. He will be a major contender in the final two races of the season." third' MICHIGAN is a team which trains for long runs. To date, most of its runs have been 8,000 meters. Districts and NCAAs are 10,000 meters, and the team plans to do well. "It seems like most of the field at the Big Ten meet were slowing down at the end," Barquist said. "The further into the race we get, the stronger we get relative to the rest of the field." Warhurst said: "John started a little slow and made up lots of spaces in the final mile. He'll be tough when we start running 10,000 meter races at Districts and NCAAs. "We have been improving all season and will continue to do so. I was fairly pleased to place third. Second would have been nice though. We really would have liked to get State." - JODI LEICHTMAN Spikers drop to. Big Ten BY ERIC LEMONT There are rumors that the plight of the Michigan women's volleyball team has driven people to superstitious measures. Rumors that local deejays won't leave their statiohs, and Preacher Mike won't leave the Diag until the team wins a game in the Big Ten. Hope Mike doesn't get too cold. The Wolverines fell to 0-11 in league play last weekend, losing to Ohio State and Indiana on the road. What can be said that has not been said already about the Wolverines' play? Well, maybe this: "We're getting really close to winning," captain Marie Ann Davidson said. "It seems we're getting a little closer and a little closer each time." MICHIGAN coach Joyce Davis said: "It's been an interesting year. I. really have no idea what to attribute it to. he Wolverines lost to the Buckeyes, 9-15, 5-15, 9-15, after falling behind 8-0 in the first two games. The biggest problem Michigan had was returning Ohio State's serves. The Wolverines committed 12 receiving errors to the Buckeyes' two. Ohio State coach Jim Stone believes his team's superior serving was the main factor in the match. "Michigan was never able to create a consistent offense," he said. "That's E 'M' rowers win n bag of medals BY JOSH MITNICK The Michigan men's and women's varsity crew came home with five medals and a silver cup after a successful campaign at the Speakman Regatta in Columbus last weekend. Entering eight boats in six races, the Wolverines faced tough, competition from regional foes representing Mercyhurst, Cincinnati, Marietta, Purdue and Ohio State. En route to capturing the gold medal, the men's lightweight-eight boat completed the 1,500-meter course with a time of four minutes, 45.2 seconds, edging the squad from Mercyhurst by 0.8 seconds. SENIOR team member Tom O'Brien said that entering the race the lightweight-eight squad was coming off a disappointing finish at the Head of the Charles Regatta in Boston and didn't know what to expect from their competition. Tom Webber, the coxswain (steerer) of the winning boat, said that the boats were virtually even during the last 250 meters of the race. "It was basically a dogfight at the end," he said. According to O'Brien, the race was too close to call. "At the end, our coxswain (Webber) thought we had won, but when we got to shore, the people that were watching thought that Mercyhurst had edged us out." Both the men's lightweight-four and women's-eight boats finished second in their races to receive the silver. ALTHOUGH the second-place showing was more than respectable, the women's eight squad was disappointed with their finish. Taking the bronze medal with a third-place finish in the club eight division at the Head of the Charles Regatta the week, before and posting the best times in the heats had the team anticipating- gold. "The heat was a very good-race for us, but in the final race, our concentration was muddled," said team member Regina Dodge. "It wasn't as smooth in the final as it was in the heats." The women's-eight posted a time of 5:18.9, two seconds behind the winning boat from Purdue. "Actually, we thought that Cincinnati would be our major competition," added Dodge. "But Purdue is always strong, so we weren't very surprised." In addition, the men's heavyweight-eight and heavyweight- four boats finished with times of 4:39.6 and 5:08.9, respectively, to claim the bronze medal in heir competitions. This week the team is sponsoring an Erg-a-thon to raise money for new equipment, coaching and racing fees. Team members will be out on the Diag on Wednesday and Thursday rowing for donations. KAREN HANDELMAN/Daily Autumn Collins (3), Carla Hunter (7), and the rest of the Michigan volleyball team suffered two more setbacks over the weekend with losses at Ohio State and Indiana. The Wolverines travel to Michigan State on Wednesday, still looking for their first conference victory. the bottom line." AS FOR Michigan's season-long slump, Stone cannot pin down a reason. "In the two games we've played against them this- season, their talent has been OK. I think Michigan has been a fairly competitive team. We have really had to take care of business to beat them." As has been their pattern this season, the Wolverines played better in the second game of the weekend set. Although losing the match in four sets, 6-15, 16-14, 11-14, 15-17, Michigan out-dug and out-blocked Indiana, 63-37 and 28-18, respectively. "We don't seem to be able to do what we want to do on Friday night, but we bounce back on Saturday night," said Davidson. "We all played well against Indiana. I really don't know why we lost." Whatever the reason, Davis does not want a repeat of last weekend's performance Wednesday at Michigan State. She has not scheduled any days off for the team between games. "We are by no means sitting around crying about the loss," Davis said. "Michigan State is a must win."
