The Michigan Daily - Monday, October 31, 1988 - Page 9 Allison Continued from Page 7 is more old-fashioned." He attributes his melodies to a- childhood adoration of the Beatles and the Monkees. "They're all I liked PASS IT DAROUND! Share the news, ~ alt when I was five or six, so I have it stamped into my head what melodies should be like,"he says. Consequently, he spends a lot more time on lyrics than music. He will begin with an idea, work out a melody, then pound out lyrics to make sure everything fits, "even if it's just a bunch of jokes." Jokes are one of his strongsuits. He wrote comedy and made Super- 8mm films as a teenager, and did some cartooning. He was born in Detroit, but moved to "the sticks" of rural Washtenaw County at age seven. He bought his first guitar in his early teens, but no one was around to teach him to play. Since he "couldn't figure out how to play anything else," he began writing his own songs. Many of his early songs sound unique because he tuned his guitar wrong - he had the bottom two strings tuned to the same note. He worked many years developing his songwriting skills, and merging them with his comedic talent. He finally reached the point "where every 20th song I wrote was decent." Now he will work on every song until it is finished, not throw- ing any away. He formed the current line-up of Odd Sox just over a year ago. Back in his living room, as his cat sheds black and white hair all over his beige couch, Allison talks of life on the road. "The farthest away we've played is Wheeling, West Virginia, where we opened for Joan Jett," he says. "There were 20 or 30 girls dressed up just like her. I kept thinking I saw her, but it was someone else. She was late. Wenever did see her." Van rides to West Virginia and Minnesota "can be a drag, especially if we made no money the night be- fore," Allison says. Playing the ac- tual gig is his favorite part of the process. Ordinarily, the crowd's size is ir- relevant to the band. "I don't care if it's packed or not, as long as some- body's getting into it," says Allison. "We played a show in Columbus to seven people. But it was fun because they got into it - hootin' and hol- lerin'." The band is pinning its hopes on the new album to see where it takes them. They are having a record-re- lease party for their first album, Monkey Business, tonight at the Beat. In the meantime, they are playing more club dates, and Allison is working on some more of the catchiest tunes this side of Buddy Holly. But he doesn't want to know why. "If I knew what made them so catchy, it would wreck it," he says. "Then I'd try to do it all the time. It would be like a conscious effort. If you find out what it is, don't tell me." Prince Continued from Page 8 were when they thought they werd going to see Prince. I have the same nothing, and for me, that's very little consolation. The show was cancelled due to "technical difficulties." In normals- peak, Prince couldn't fit his massive stage and light set-up into cozy Crisler Arena. I can understand that, but I simply can't fathom how the hell anyone could have booked, ad- vertised, and sold tickets to a show without first seeing if, logistically, could be done! It's just ridiculous! Hey Prince! I got a few questions! Purple One! Yo! Shorty! Listen up! Is your whole live set-up worth it if you can't spread your word to the masses at places like Crisler Arena? Aren't the tickets just a tad expensive at $22.50 each? I know you're a per- fectionist and a control freak, but when foes concern for your art be come neglect for your audience? Listen Prince, I love you and all, but if you're just going to hole up in Minneapolis and crank out a coupla great records a year, I can dig it. Do funk, rock, soul, fusion, whatever tickles your fancy, (except folk: I personally know three people who choked on their own vomit after hearing "Sometimes It Snows In April"), just do it with your usual Princely vigor. But if you're going to perform live, don't pull what you pulled in Ann Arbor. As my pal Spike Lee says, you gotta "Do the right thing." WEEKEND MAGAZINE Fridays in The Daily 763-0379 I .
