Water polo club left out of ne BY JOSHUA MITNICK Imagine the Michigan football team having to practice on a field half the size of a regulation field. Then imagine the team having to play every game on the road, never in Ann Arbor in front of the home fans. For the Michigan water polo club, the above situation is a reality. For the past few years, the club has been limited to practicing at the pool in the Intramural Building. That pool is half the width and two-thirds the length of the regulation water polo playing area. As a result, the team cannot host any tournaments. With the opening of the new Canham Natatorium this year, club members thought they finally would get a chance to practice and compete in.a regulation-sized pool. This hope has slowly eroded. "At the beginning of the year we got positive reinforcement from administrators, but nothing ever came of it," said head coach Ben Quitner. Quitner said that now the athletic department has decided to defer its decision until January. "We don't want to interfere with the varsity sports. We understand that they put a lot of money into their programs. But whatever leftover time there is, we'll take it," Quitner said. Associate Athletic Director Jack Weidenbach said: "Right now, until w facility further notice, the pool will be used for intercollegiate swimming and diving. We have no plans for using the pool for water polo." And that has left the players in a predicament. "We have a lot of people who want to see us play but can't," said team co-captain John Koupal. "Having fan support really helps. It's an advantage we'd like to have." TANNING CENTER - Ph. 747-8844 Convenient Campus Location. 216 S.
