The Michigan Daily - Monday, October 24, 1988 - Page 9 Cassini Continued from Page 7 "The four of us are practically married to each other," Madison said. "We're like a family. There is a chemistry between us that is very important to the music itself." "We always know what the others are going to do in a performance," added Conway. "That comes from working with the same people over and over again. That's how you ma- ture as a performing group." Named after a 19th century Italian violin maker, the Cassini Ensemble has in .the past included as many as 21 musicians. Madison and Conway, however, prefer the intimacy of a quartet. They believe this close interaction between performers has much to do with the recent popular- ity of chamber music. "We don't want the group to get too big," Madison said. "People like our music because they feel they are really part of the performance. Sym- bhony orchestras just don't project that interaction to the same extent. "In a symphony, the musicians and conductor are on stage, dressed in tuxedos and black gowns. I think some people are put off by that atti- tude, that separation between the performers and the audience. If it were up to us, we'd wear jeans to our performances." Conway thinks the popularity of chamber music can be explained in part by the waning mystique of the conductor. "People are realizing that, even though there have been great conductors and great interpreters of near and dear to me," Conway said, referring to something he had heard on the radio the day before that re- sembled Pachabel's "Canon." "Classical music is not the type of music you listen to while clean- ing the house," added Madison. "It requires more thought than that." The Cassini Ensemble plays pieces mostly from the late classical, romantic, and contemporary periods, and has a well-deserved reputation for its interpretation of the music of "In a symphony, the musicians and conductor are on stage, dressed in tuxedos and black gowns. I think some people are put off by that attitude, that separation between the performers and the audience. If it were up to us, we'd wear jeans to our performances." -John Madison, Cassini Ensemble violinist Madison likes jazz and New Age music, but is not particularly happy with the way the recording industry has revolutionized these and other musical genres. "No matter how ad- vanced recording technology be- comes, it will never duplicate the energy of a live performance," he said. "What makes the music excit- ing is being able to hear the surface noise, the sound of the bow being pulled across strings." The Cassini Ensemble has re- leased no commercial albums, but they do record each performance for their own review. On the subject of studio recording, which he considers a "necessary evil" of the music business, Conway is particularly vocal. "Modern video and audio technol- ogy is creating a society of in- valids," he said. "Appreciating music requires a focused concentration on the live event. I believe in active participation." And active participation in the world of music is what the Cassini Ensemble is all about. "We love working together, and we love what we do," said Madison. "We never want to get to the point where we view this as only a job." Monday, October 24, 8:30 p.m., Jean Paul (allery, North Campus Slusser Pozzi's Performance Art This week the Institute for the Humanities and the School of Art sponsors Lucio Pozzi, as part of the Artist-in Residence program. Relentless Waltz - Music by Todd Levin, words by Lucio Pozzi Pozzi reads his compositions to the background of 'transcendental waltz." a rhere will be a reception immediately following the performance. +Tuesday, October 25, 7 p.m., Chrysler Auditorium, North Campus music, it is still the musicians who are really doing most of the work." While both musicians appreciate their growing circle of fans, they lament the tendency of some new converts to mistakenly identify clas- sical music with that indefensible genre, muzak. "I get furious when I hear a bas- tardized version of some song that is Brahms. But both Conway and Madison are open to a wide variety of music types, if not as performers, then as listeners. "I find that listening to raucous rock and roll chills me out the most," Conway said. "A lot of times I need that kind of energy to be able to focus and relax before our perfor- mances. It cleanses my palate." What to do with One's Imagination in this Day and Age - lecture A slide Pozzi presents his own artistic methodology. t 't The Calendar of The University of Michigan The calendar combines meeting, lecture, workshop, and conference announcements with other events happening each week on campus.
