WEEKEND MAGAZINE Fridays in The Daily 763-0379 BY MIKE GILL Last weekend at the annual "Skate with the Wolverines," brothers Tim and Mike Helber were skating with the Michigan hockey team - just as they had many years ago. But today, there is a fundamental difference. Years ago, they looked up and asked the men in blue for autographs. This time, they were the affection of the young kids. "It really hit home at the skate," said first-year right-winger Mike. "To realize that five to 10 years ago I was one of those little kids chasing the guys around on the team." GROWING UP in Ann Arbor, the two did everything two brothers usually do - fight and play sports. Their dad would freeze over the next door neighbor's lawn, or take them to the local hockey rink. Older brother Tim, now a junior, and Mike would square off with some high flying fisticuffs. At one point in their relationship, Tim became so upset at Mike's smart alack ways that he ordered his best friend to have the honors. "We beat up each other every day," said Tim. It was sibling rivalry at its best. NOW, they've never been closer. It started when they played together at Ann Arbor Pioneer High School. They began working out - lifting weights, running, and pushing each other to reach full potential. "When one of us was slacking off or one of us would say 'I don't think I'm going to do this today, I'm going to sleep,' the other one would say 'Baloney, you're getting your ass in gear and gonna get going,"' Mike said. The road to Michigan was very different for the two. For Tim it was a bumpy road filled with potholes and detours. But for Mike it was a clearly lit path. Tim tried out as a walk-on candidate his first year, but was'cut. Despite the setback, he decided to try again his sophomore season - and was rewarded with a spot on the roster. "It's admirable that he came back," said Michigan coach Red Berenson. "It is a good side of his character. The first time he really wasn't prepared to make the Michigan team. He wasn't prepared to earn a spot. He was only prepared to try out." TIM wasn't a big star last year, earning only one point the entire season. Meanwhile, Mike became a 'The hockey sense they both have is amazing.' gonna up and leave the team. I'm not going to play second fiddle to anybody - that's foolish. It actually helped me 100 percent seeing him there and knowing we could encourage each other. When he's out there with me, it's a shot in the arm." SAID ROOMMATE and backup goaltender Tim Genyk, who played with Tim in high school, "He always puts the team first and then seeks personal achievements to help the team achieve their goals." "I don't think we'll ever be told that we shouldn't have sibling rivalry because I think we have it at a perfect equilibrium," Mike said. "We're the best of friends but yet we're competitive enough to keep each other going." "The hockey sense they both have is amazing," said junior center Rob Brown. "It's something you can't learn. That's one of the reasons both of them have gotten this far. A coach can't teach you that." During last weekend's series against Miami of Ohio, Berenson put the two brothers on the same line. "At this point, I think it probably was good for both of them to play together," Berenson said. "Down the road they may not play together. I don't want them to feel like they have to play together to play well." The strategy paid off. With their parents, grandparents, friends looking on, both scored their first collegiate goals with Mike assisting on Tim's. The two brothers, the two former rivals, were now teammates and best friends - accumulating ,points; playing on the same line. "Points don't matter," said Tim. "The fact is we're both playing on the same team, contributing to the team. That's what matters." -junior center Rob Brown FOURTEE N LUXURIOU S CINEMAS ANN ARBOR 4100 Carpenter Road At the Intersection of I-94 & U523 On the site of the former University Drive-In 24 HOUR TELEPHONE: 973-8380 Bargain Matinee Daily Mon.-Sat. $3.00 To 6PM / Sunday & Holidays First Show Only Tuesday Bargain Day " All Shows All Times $2.00 Continuous Shows Daily / Late Shows Friday & Saturday scholarship athlete. What emotions would flow between brothers? What competitive jealousies would arise? Would the friendship end? How might it feel playing in your younger brother's shadow? And how would it feel to outshine your older brother? "Coach thought that would be a problem, which really surprised me a little bit," Tim said. "He.took me for granted a little bit, took my family for granted, and Mike for granted. It's not like that at all. Come on man, that's foolish - we're the best of friends.
