Page 10- The Michigan Daily -Wednesday, October 19, 1988 Higgi-ns Continued from Page 1 The charges involve high school prospects being offered a monthly allowance of $300 beginning when the prospects signed a letter of intent to attend Kentucky and ending upon leaving the university. Other enticements included a car at the time of signing, a new car after enrolling at Kentucky, and financial assistance to the prospect's family. An additional charge alleges "a basketball staff member at Kentucky made improper recruiting contact" with the prospect, reportedly Higgins, who was offered the illegal inducements. The illegality reportedly involves an assistant coach shooting baskets at a high school practice with the recruit. Higgins' high school coach denied Higgins had ever shot baskets with an "assistant coach," according to published reports. Kentucky has declined to release the names of the players involved in the scandal on advice of its legal counsel. "Sean knew that things weren't right, and he never accepted anything. His dad encouraged him not to do anything that was not right," Frieder said. "The allegations involving Higgins, we've read about in the newspapers. The fact that (the NCAA) made that allegation is no surprise to us," said attorney Joe Bill Campbell who is representing Kentucky assistant basket- ball coach Dwayne Casey. Casey has been charged with allegedly sending money to Chris Mills, who now plays for Kentucky. Casey has denied all of the allegations. Higgins was one of the most highly recruited high school players in the country two years ago. In an unusual and extremely controversial situation, the 6-9 guard/forward from Los Angeles originally signed to play for UCLA. The NCAA released him from his binding letter of intent after Higgins claimed he signed the letter under duress. Higgins was academically ineligible for the Big Ten season last year after he failed to meet Michigan eligibility standards. During the spring, he pleaded "no contest" to an assault charge and was forced to perform community service. Kentucky Colonel Sports Editor Tom Spalding contributed to this story. Call 764-0557 Oakland nips L.A. on McGwire homer FROM STAFF REPORTS Oakland Athletics first baseman Mark McGwire with one out in the ninth inning homered off Los Angeles Dodger pitcher Jay Howell to give the Athletics a 2-1 victory over the Dodgers, and narrow the Dodgers' series lead to two games to one. The Athletics took a 1-0 lead in the third inning when second baseman Glen Hubbard led off with a long single to the left field wall. Dodger left fielder Mickey Hatcher played the ball perfectly off the wall to hold Hubbard at first base. It became moot however as Hubbard stole second base and advanced to third when Los Angeles catcher Mike Scioscia threw the ball into center field. Hubbard scored when catcher Ron Hassey followed with a base hit into left. The Dodgers tied the score in the sixth when first baseman Franklin Stubbs doubled home rookie Jeff Hamilton. Hamilton was sacrificed to second by shortstop Alfredo Griffin, who the replays showed was out of the baseline. Dodger starter John Tudor departed with one out in the second inning. 4 PLASMA DONORS $ Earn Extra Cash $ - Earn $20 on your first donation. You can earn up to $120 a month.
