BY STEVEN GINNS In 1984, the Detroit Red Wings got no respect due to their on-ice performances. In 1988, the Red Wings don't deserve any respect for their off-ice performances. Within those four years owner Mike Illitch and General Manager Jimmy Devellano transformed this team from a laughing stock into a Stanley Cup contender. However, in the process, their priorities have become mixed up. They have placed a higher value on winning than on players' welfare. Management felt the Wings had a problem. Six games into the season, the Wings had only one victory. Only 5 percent of the season was complete and the Wings weren't in first place. Time to panic. As a result, left wing Petr Klima was put back on the payroll and sent to the minor leagues to get back into playing shape. At the same time, right wing Bob Probert stopped his therapy for alcohol dependence at the Betty Ford Clinic after lasting 10 days and it is rumored that he will rejoin the Wings soon. Both Klima, the bad Czech, and Probert have problems; Klima's attitude and Probert's drinking. They have never solved their problems. In last year's Stanley Cup semifinals Klima and Probert were among. players who caused a stir by staying out after curfew at a bar. After extensive meetings with the involved players, only Klima and Probert were kept on the roster. Both players were urged to seek help in solving their problems, while the other less talented players were released. At the start of this year, each player's problem resurfaced. Probert and Klima purposely came late to practice and deliberately missed their flight to Adirondack, where the minor league team is located. Subsequently, both players were suspended without pay. During the supensions, Probert sought help at the Betty Ford Clinic while Klima was arrested for drunk driving. Yet, these problems have been overlooked because the Wings were off to a slow start. Even head coach Jacques Demers' behavior is surprising. Demers, who preaches the value of hard work and discipline, contradicts himself. He is allowing Klima to play without demonstrating any hard work or discipline in overcoming his prob- However, fans were starting to grow impatient with the lack of winning. Klima and Probert are two talented hockey players and will help the Red Wings win many games. But at what price? There is no indication that these problems have or will ever be solved. What if Probert, on his next drinking binge, kills himself? I guess it would be all right as long as the Red Wings are Stanley Cup Champions But winning isn't everything. It is the only thing. As a result, the stands will be full and profits will be made. The Wings will win, maybe even the Stanley Cup. But they just don't deserve respect. Associated Press Detroit Red Wing right winger Bob Probert, seen here being knocked down during a game against Minnesota last year, left the Betty Ford Clinic, after receiving treatment for only 10 days. Steve Harris, Jackie Joyner-Kersee, Florence Griffith- Joyner, all medalists and all from the same school. If this university (21 medals overall-16 gold) decided to become its own nation, it would have finished just behind Hungary and ahead of Yugoslavia in the Olympic medal chart. Did you know that this same school also has the No. 1 ranked football team in the nation? It also has the No. 1 ranked women's volleyball team, the top-ranked water polo team, and 1987 national champions in gymnastics, men's track, women's softball, and golf. The school colors? Blue and yellow- unfortunately for Michigan fans, it's, like, powder blue and pastel gold. U-C-L-A: spell it, learn it, live it. The Bruins have the best athletic program in the country, perhaps the greatest in history, as well as the best combination of athletics and academics anywhere. SORRY, Michigan fans, but what we've done isn't quite up to par with those surfers out west. I know they dress in unbecoming colors, but they're so much better then we are, or anybody else, that they're making every other athletic department in the country look wimpy. UCLA has many recruiting ad- vantages. Among these are great facilities, many remodeled for the 1984 Olympics, great weather, and its location in the second largest media-market in the country. Yet UCLA is a great school, and it does not make large compromises of its academic standards to have competitive sports teams. Only Michigan, Notre Dame, Duke, and North Carolina can make similar claims. However, the Bruins do not use their academics as an excuse for NOT winning national champion- ships. Michigan fans point to the fact that we have higher SAT scores than Oklahoma or Auburn as justification for mediocre perform- ances in bowl games and post-season tournaments. PEOPLE SEEM to feel that if. we could be stupid, we'd be an a 1thhir n euprhnnep U1CL A is n they are at UCLA. Northwestern, Cal-Berkeley, and Virginia all tried to establish athletic programs equal to their already stellar academic institutions, but found it too difficult to mix the two. While these schools made academics their first priority, Michigan could easily take this same stand, and watch its once-mighty athletic department fritter away. MICHIGAN has always boasted that it may not win national championships, but it doesn't cheat. Maybe if we had a payroll like the schools of the Southwest Confer- ence, we'd also win titles. In fact, the Bruins fired basketball coach Walt Hazzard for allowing his team to be undisciplined off the court, before he could get the school into any trouble with the NCAA. UCLA will not tolerate any behavior that could be embarrassing to the school. Michigan students, before you get on your high horse about our great athletic department, realize that there is one better. Much better. i 0f It's amazing but true.
