Mich-ellany Interview: Eclipse Co-coordinator Jeff Brown.1 The List What's going on in Ann Arbor this weekend. 1 4 INTERVIEW Continued from Page 12 dance floors. Or the Horace Silver album, it's*like the hip thing. He can play for 5,000 people in a place that the night before would host a concert by like Duran Duran or Luther Vandross. And then the next night it's Courtney Pine. In England, jazz has now become a very, very hip music. That's something that at Eclipse we're trying to do. We're working on a campaign so that people will equate jazz with hip. Our new campaign slogan is "Get hip with jazz." And that's what we want people to do. We're trying to stress that jazz isn't devil's music or whatever you may have heard. That jazz is really a hip thing. It's hip, it's hop, it's happening. And it'll get you to dance, and it'll get you to groove. If anybody wants to go see Courtney Pine, then go see that show. You're guaranteed to do a little toe-tappin'. W: Let's see, you discussed the lecture series on women and jazz as one of the educational things that Eclipse does, what other sorts of educational programs does Eclipse povide? B: Usually with the concerts we provide a workshop. Which is an informal opportunity for people in the community, whether they're just musicians or fans, to get together and meet the artist and ask questions. It's very, very informal. It gives the artists a chance to find out what their fans are interested in, what their followers are interested in. We've done them with Ahmad Jamal. We're doing one with Courtney Pine and one with Michelle Rosewoman. It's a really good opportunity to see what the life of a jazz musician is all about and understand what they're doing. W: Is there anything else that you'd like to say about Eclipse? B: Jazz performers really like performing for Eclipse because we're so much different from the other promoters that they work with. We're not interested in making a profit. We pay them a lot more than other promoters, and we really care about them while they're here. If they want to go play tennis, we find them someone to play tennis with. If they want to go out, for crab then we find them a place to go out and have crab. Whatever they want to do, we really cater to their needs because we recognize them as artists rather than as a way to make a quick profit on a rock concert. The artists really appreciate that and that's why they keep coming back. We've had many of the performers come back every few years. They really enjoy performing for Eclipse. 0 The Mus cal Thea (N C Conceived and orig Micha Book by W James Kirkwood and Marvin Nicholas Dante Co-choreograp Directed and choreographed by Tim Millet, Music directec Production based o October 13, October Mendelss Tickets are $10 and $7; at THE LEAGUE TICKET 01 To charge your ticke Men's and women's gold signet rings, hand engraved with Initials, Greek, Hebrew, and Oriental letters.
