The Michigan Daily - Wednesday, October 12, 1988 -Page 11 Adam's Rib BY ADAM SCHRAGER Ex-Cubs hibernate when post-season play begins The first cardinal sin in baseball is throwing a hanging breaking ball a good hitter. Not far behind is sing a former Chicago Cub in a pressure situation. ' ?With the 1988 League Championship Series among us, it is necessary to comment yet again bC the jinx of the city of Chicago on Dlayoff baseball teams. Los Angeles Dodger pitcher Jay Howell and Boston Red Sox pitcher Lee Smith are two current examples of this new phenomenon known as "Ex- ,pubitis." It is known throughout baseball circles that every time a player kaves the Cubs, instant success is reiped. The most obvious example of-this is Lou Brock, who the Cubs traded for someone they soon dropped like a bad habit. Brock went on to compile 3,000+ hits and be'come the most feared base stealer 4fP his time. But even Brock had troubles in post-season play, especially in the 1968 World Series aginst the Detroit Tigers. In the current Dodger-New York Met series, Howell, the Dodgers best reliever this season, came into game dnt: in the ninth inning with the Dodgers ahead. The result: A Dodger Boss. ,,Game three also provided Howell *with the opportunity to save a Dodger victory. This time, after walking the first batter, Howell was gaught for possessing pine tar on his glove. The result: An ejection, suspension, and another Dodger loss. - Game two arrived in the American League Championship Series between the Red Sox and the Oakland Athletics with Boston down in the series 1-0. The Red Sox desperately needed a win before going to Oakland to play the ollowing three games. Entering the ninth, the game was tied and former Cub relief ace Smith was called in. the result: A Red Sox loss. Why does "Ex-Cubitis" strike when the game is on the line and not during the regular season? Coming from one of the most devout Cub fins of all time, it is obvious that these players cannot shed their roots. hey are jinxed and will continue to forever. It probably goes back to the early 1940's when then Cubs owner William Wrigley started to manufacture chewing gum as well as Correction SThe photo in yesterday's Daily *as not of Tom Brock. It was of Oreg Haeger, another Wolverine first baseman in a contest against Western Michigan, not Wisconsin. Rumor has it that the Freedent, Dentyne, and Rain-Blo gum people hired a gypsy to put a curse on their major competitor. Since then, the Cubs have been bageled when it comes to World Series and their ex-players remain haunted by this dastardly deed. Look at Bill Buckner. You remember Buckner. He was the player who tried to commit suicide by stepping in front of a bus, but it went through his legs. He was also the former Boston Red Sox and Cub first baseman who allowed a ball through his legs to lose the 1986 World Series for the Red Sox. You're probably saying what about Dennis Eckersley, the Athletics' hero and the American League Championship Series Most Valuable Player? The ace reliever had a short three year stint with the Cubbies and it will show in the upcoming World Series. Before the end of the Series, A's fans will be Eck-hausted of their current relief diety. What can be done to overcome this debilitating curse? When Newton was hit on the head with an apple, did anyone ask him whether it was a Golden delicious or Macintosh red? These types of questions are stupefying with their elusive answers floating about in the air Maybe that is why they call Chicago the "Windy City." Dennis Eckersley was named the Most Valuable Player of the American League Championship Series when credited with three saves in four games. Eckersley has not followed the pattern of ex-Cubs in post-season 'Associated Press he was play.
