Sharples, last year's team Most Valuable Player, was backed by outstanding play from first-year player Denny Felsner and sophomore Jim Ballantine. "Sharples could be the best goalie in the (Central Collegiate Hockey Association) this year," said senior co-captain Todd Brost. "It makes a big difference to have him back there to cover up your mistakes." SHARPLES said: "We got a lot of good bounces and they got a lot of bad bounces. It's unfortunate that it was such a blowout. This team has a lot of depth, and tonight we didn't show it." Before fans even were settled in their seats, White had grabbed the lead. Junior Ryan Pardoski scored an 4M9 soccer club kicks Ball State unassisted goal on a breakaway less than 15 seconds into the game. Blue scored a short-handed goal to tie the game, 1-1, as first-year player Mike Helber - brother of Wolverine junior Tim Helber - slapped a hard shot past Sharples into the left-hand corner of the net. Another first-year player, walk-on Franz Herbert, gave White the lead it never relinquished when he stole a pass, evaded the defender, and connected from 10 feet away. WHITE began to break open the game in the second period. After sophomore Kent Brothers and junior Mike Moes exchanged goals, White capitalized on a Blue penalty. Junior Alex Roberts scored on a power play, and first-year player Denny Felsner added another goal within a minute. Herbert added insult to injury with his second goal, this one in a short- handed situation, putting the White up, 6-2. Brost scored his first goal of the night to narrow the margin to 6-3 at the end of two periods. Brost finished with two goals and two assists. The White offense simply overwhelmed the Blue in the final period. Ballantine put in two goals and an assist. Senior co-captain Myles O'Connor, Felsner and Brothers also chipped in. with goals. "It's hard to say what our top lines are," coach Red Berenson said after the game. Despite the one-sided score, Brost was optimistic. "The intensity level was higher than any other year that I've been here. It's a good sign; we're ready to play." Berenson agreed. "You'd never know it was an intrasquad game from the amount of hitting and contact. We're anxious to move on to some foreign opposition." Michigan officially begins its season this Friday and Saturday nights against CCHA foe Miami of Ohio. FROM STAFF REPORTS The Michigan men's soccer club shut out Ball State Friday, 6-0. Associated Press Good-bye, says Jose Canseco to Boston and his third home run in the American League play-off series. Oakland swept Boston in four games. A's win fourth, sweep Sox, 4-1 OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) - The Oakland Athletics, showing off the pitching and power that made them baseball's winningest team this season, completed a four-game sweep in the American League playoffs by beating the Boston Red Sox, 4-1, Sunday. Jose Canseco, the major-league leader in home runs, tied an A.L. playoff record with his third home run of the series, and Dennis Eckersley, the leader in saves, set a major-league playoff mark with his fourth save as he finished a four- hitter for Dave Stewart and Rick Honeycutt. The Athletics returned to the World Series for the first time since4 1974. Game 1 will be Saturday night in either New York or Los Angeles. Oakland posted the first four-game sweep since 1976, when Cincinnati's Big Red Machine rolled over the New York Yankees in the World Series. The Athletics also got some long-due revenge against Boston, which swept Oakland out of the 1975 playoffs and ended its run of three consecutive4 championships. The Red Sox, whose longest losing string during the regular season was four games, picked a bad time to duplicate that streak. The Athletics dominated Boston this year, going 13-3 and winning all eight in Oakland, giving them 15 victories over the Red Sox in the last 16 meetings in Oakland. Canseco, the major-league hom4 run leader with 42, hit a solo shot in the first inning and tied George Brett's A.L. playoff record. Canseco has hit five home runs in 26 career at-bats against loser Bruce Hurst, including one in Game 1. Stewart made the early lead stand up, allowing only Jim Rice's RBI grounder in the sixth. Stewart left after Ellis Burks' leadoff single in th eighth and Honeycutt immediatel got Marty Barrett to ground into a double play. Eckersley pitched the ninth to get his fourth save in as many games. Dwight Evans, the only player on either team who participated in Boston's 1975 playoff victory over Oakland, did not help the Red Sox. He struck out with the bases loaded to end the first inning and fann with the tying run on second base to end the sixth.
