The Michigan Daily - Monday, October 10, 1988 - Page 9 Nati~on Continued from Page 8 made, the film itself becomes solely rinterested in resolving the situation and loses sight of its original potential. This is not to say that the film as a whole falls flat; numerous facets add a three-dimensional quality which raise Alien Nation above the r~l y Society Continued from Page 8 mastermind" Kurt Valaquen sees to it that the album contains more samples than a mix by local D.J. The Wizard. The computerization of Information Society doesn't stop with their music. The band has an } IBM compatible computer disk which stores a zillion K worth of average buddy-cop or science fiction film; the special effects, for example, enhance, but do not detract from the story, which is a nice change. Though the writing did lose - its focus on the level of social sig- nificance, it never lost any enter- tainment value. Alien Nation does anything but alienate the audience. It has laughs, excitement, and a great cast. It would have been nice if it meant more, but that isn't a prerequisite to having a good time at the movies - which this film surely is. information on the band. And when you've finished going through the information on the disk you can find out their "super secret coded message." If you don't know anything about IBMs or MS DOS, you can find the message on the bottom of the record sleeve. This band's techno-funky-James Brown- hip hop sound is sure to please, so make Information Society "What's On Your Mind." Saturday Night Lavin Saturday night Christine Lavin performed two shows at the Ark, She is the only folk snger who travels with one guitar and two batons and puts them all to use. This may seem somewhat offbeat, but Lavin always kept perfect time while play- ing. She immediately. built a rapport with the audience, which is easy enough to do in the intimate setting that the Ark provides. Then she went into a series of songs and stories that kept the audience aspin almost as fast as her batons.
