Slamming doors AS PRESIDENT Duderstadt's inaug- uration proceeded behind Hill Audito- rium's locked doors, Ann Arbor police and newly-deputized campus security arrested and brutalized students protesting outside. This first use of deputized security under the new protest policy removes any remaining doubt about their collec- tive purpose: to suppress student ex- pression. Excluding students from the inaugu- ration ceremony is just another example of the University administration's pat- tern of slamming doors on students. The regents chose Duderstadt behind closed doors, in a secret search pro- cess, without student consent. This act blatantly violated the students' right to choose. The protest policy attempts to close the door to student expression. Yester- day only proves that students are de- nied the right to protest their exclusion from Duderstadt's selection process. Now, the closing doors of jail cells and hospital rooms have been added to the list. Yesterday, campus police ar- rested three protesters, hospitalized a fourth, and yanked and dragged dozens of others away from the police vehicles used to make the arrests. This was an appalling display of brutality. This incident unmasks the ridiculous claim that deputization "improves safety." The president and the procession were not in danger. The protesters were demonstrating non- violently. Nonetheless, a demonstrator was dragged by his hair and ears, another knocked unconscious and many more thrown to the ground. The unconscionable. violence was the first use of University deputy sheriffs to implement the protest policy and is an ominous sign for the future of Duderstadt's administration.
