4 Page 10 - The Michigan Daily - Thursday, October 6, 1988 Blocks come The Michigan Daily - Thursday, October 6, 1988 - first for TE Jeff Brown BY ADAM SCHEFTER The Wake Forest safety obviously was confused by Michigan's unusual offensive formation. On the opposite side of the line stood two Wolverine wide receivers, Greg McMurtry and John Kolesar. Next to them was tight end Jeff Brown. When quarterback Michael Taylor yelled hike, Brown didn't move. The safety then committed to the receivers and when he did, Brown took off. Twenty-eight yards later, Brown found himself standing all by himself in the middle of the field where even a little leaguer could have hit him on the numbers. "He was soooo wide open," said Michigan coach Bo Schembechler. "No one was even near him. The safety thought that Brown was going to stay in and block." THAT'S NO surprise. While Brown, a Shaker Heights, Ohio, native, has demonstrated that he can be a threat through the air, it is his ability to put defenders on the ground that makes him so valuable. All season he has been regarded by his coaches as a standout blocker on one of the best offensive lines in the country. Brown realizes that he would be receiving more hype if he was pulling in more passes, but more importantly, he knows exactly what is expected of him, "I take a lot of pride in my blocking," Brown said. "I'd like to roommate and his main competition at tight end. And Brown's cooking isn't the only thing that has drawn raves from Walker. "Jeff's a good tight end," Walker said. "He's big. He's strong. He's everything you want at the position." Walker and Brown have shared the tight end duties, each having started two games. Brown is known as the better blocker, while Walker is regarded as the better receiver. This makes for fun conversation in and out of the apartment. "We kid each other about catching passes and blocking," Walker said. "I tell him he could work on his catching a little more and he tells me all about blocking." Still, real criticism has come Brown's way in the past for his lackadaisical attitude. Not that he's Oscar Madison, but Schembechler has constantly gotten on Brown to pick up the intensity level. In addition, hassistant coach Gary Moeller has hounded him to run crisper routes. Brown has heard this talk and has taken steps to make sure those faults are no longer as prevalent. "Those statements were true of my earlier years here," Brown said. "But I've made up my mind to beat those raps and play to the best of my ability." That ability includes making some key catches and delivering a ton of blocks. That's enough to satisfy me." BROWN HAS also been praised by Derrick Walker, his Oakland goes one up on Red Sox BOSTON (AP) - Dave Henderson, a former Boston postseason hero, singled home the tie- breaking run in the eighth inning and the Oakland Athletics beat the Red Sox 2-1 yesterday in the first game of the American League playoffs. Jose Canseco's home run had held up since the fourth inning as Oakland's Dave Stewart and Bruce Hurst hooked up in a pitcher's duel. But Wade Boggs hit a sacrifice fly in the seventh setting up Henderson's Associated Press the bases loaded in the second opener. Boggs fanned twice in heroics on a chilly afternoon at Fenway Park. Carney Lansford hit Hurst's first pitch in the eighth for a double and Henderson grounded the next pitch into right field for the go-ahead single. Henderson, cheered in the pre-game introductions, was Boston's saviour in the 1986 playoffs against California. His home run rescued the Red Sox when they were one strike from elimination in Game 5.
