Page 2- The Michigan Doily - Thursday, September 8, 1988 NEWS Interim provost University President James Dud- erstadt will nominate his former as- sdciate to serve as vice president for academic affairs until the University finds a permanent person to fill the post. ,Former Associate Vice President for Academic Affairs Robert Hol- brook will be named interim vice president if the University's Board of- Regents accepts his nomination next week. ,Holbrook will move back to his former position after the University finds a permanent provost to fill Duderstadt' s shoes - Holbrook says he is not a candidate for that position. -Steve Knopper Regent selections Regents Deane Baker (R-Ann Arbor) and Nellie Varner (D-De- troit) will battle three opponents to retain their seats on the eight-mem- ber University governing board this November. -Republicans Cliff Taylor of East Lansing and Alan May of Bloom- field Hills, and Democrat Thomas Lewand of Detroit - all of whom are attorneys - announced they will challenge the incumbents this month. "*Baker, a consistently conserva- tive voter since first elected in 1973, has angered student groups by ac- tions including his proposal that the University work on the Strategic Defense Initiatives in 1985. Varner has traditionally involved herself in less controversy as a result of her less vocal approach and more liberal voting record. -Patrick Staiger Artificial heart implant at 'U' A University Hospital surgical team made state history on Aug. 7 with the first successful completion of an artificial heart implant. It took the medical team, headed by Dr. Michael Deeb, five hours to implant the Symbion J-7 model into an unidentified patient. Used only as "bridging device" until an appropriate human trans- plant can be found, the artificial im- plant was replaced with a human heart on Aug. 21. Although Deeb said the patient was doing well, he was reluctant to label the impact of the procedure upon the patient. "I don't think we can judge until the patient leads a normal life." -Kristine LaLonde Protest against city police Nearly 300 angry, chanting Ann Arbor citizens and visitors turned out in front of the Nectarine Ballroom August 9 to protest allegedly dis- criminatory behavior by city police officers against lesbians and gay men. The demonstration was motivated by a July 27 assault and battery in which a woman was verbally and physically attacked because her as- sailant believed she was a lesbian. Protest organizers Linda Kurtz of the Lesbian and Gay Rights Organ- izing Committee and University graduate student Patti Myers told the crowd that two police officers handled the incident negligently be- cause the victim told them she was attacked as a result of her sexual ori- entation. The group presented a list of de- mands, including police sensitivty training and review boards to mon- itor police behavior. Police Chief William Corbett said his department will investigate the incident and meet with LaGROC. -Anna Senkevitch -, * = A m^ o. F a 4 4i e r r n 4 3: 04 I e 4. 4. 4 4. I Controversial magazine cover Accusations of racism surround- ing Michigan Today's August edi- tion forced former University Presi- dent Robben Fleming to revoke all copies of the monthly magazine from circulation a few days after publication. The administration received sev- eral complaints from students and faculty about a photo on the monthly magazine's cover that appeared to show a white person holding a Black person. Taken from a 1907 poster ap- pearing in the Bentley Historical Library, the photo depicted a white upper-level student holding a small, green first-year student - and was originally run in conjunction with a story about hazing in the Greek sys- tem. -David Schwartz James Duderstadt University President Bo S chembechler Jack Wiedenbach 6 AthleticO Director Associate Athletic Director ; ARTHUR ANDERSE d I * Formerly vice president for academic affairs, provost. * Remains head football coach as well. * Former director of business operations. 400 Renaissance Center Suite 2600 Detroit, Michigan 48243 (313) 568-9100 R M . i We ae pleased to announce the following 1988 graduates of toe University of Michigan School of Business have recently become associated with our firm in the Audit, Tax and Management Information Consulting (MIC) practices.
