Laughing men and women sit in a row in reclining chairs at a party in a stu- dent's backyard. On a cue from two men dressed as referees, they lean their heads back and open their mouths. One referee skillfully arcs a stream of te- quila into their mouths, the other adds margarita mix. When the drinkers hear the whistle, they shake their heads rapidly, then swallow. The booze flows fast and furiously. "Nickel Beer Night" and "Drink Till You Drop" appear on every street corner. This is a good-time town. But what most students don't know is that a good time can kill. Last fall, U. of Florida (UF) freshman Robert Stevenson had too much to drink, so some friends put him to bed. The next morning a neighbor found him dead of acute alcohol poisoning. He was 18. His death shocked many UF stu- dents. One student said, "I knew drink- ing could hurt you. I just didn't think you could die." A 1986 special report to Congress by the National Clearinghouse for Alcohol and Drug Information said ignorance of alcohol claimed 218 lives in one year from accidental alcohol overdose. The common alcohol death occurs when vic- tims strangle on their own vomit while semi-conscious. Because many students are inexperi- enced drinkers they are more likely to "I knew drinking could hurt you. I just didn't think you could die." Spelling checks by phone ... Need to know how to spellmozzarella?' Or maybe you need to know the difference between 'lay' and 'lie.' Call the Grammar Crisis Line at Ball State U. and your problems may be solved. The hotline, which operates Monday through Friday, employs 18 to 25 students. It began four years ago for students who need to know a quick answer and a simple explanation from a trained tutor. Pat Hughes, The Ball State Daily News, Ball State U., IN 'E Nutrasweet safe for healthy people ... It's safe for most healthy people to guzzle diet soda sweetened with aspartame, also known as Nutras- weet, U. of Minnesota researchers say. In a study of 108 people, scientists could find no significant differences between those who consumed aspartame with meals for 24 weeks and those who took a placebo. They con- cluded that aspartame does not cause headaches or other problems in healthy people, but the sweetener is hazardous for people born with the metabolism problem called phenylketonuria. Those people can suffer brain damage if they consume too much phenylalanine, one of the amino acids in aspartame. Delores Lutz, The Minnesota Daily, U. of Minnesota, Twin Cities U"" Greeks derecognized... The Board of Trus- GPI dont want a lot of hype. I just want tees at Franklin and Marshall College, Pa., have vot- ed to "derecognize" the Greek system because it promotes underage drinking. This reflects a nation- wide trend, as many colleges have voted to derecog- nize or reform their present Greek systems. The col- leges are reacting to problems including discrimina- tion, rapes and college liability for damage caused by fraternities and sororities. u Jennifer Mezey, The Oberlin Review, Oberlin College, OH U.. Birth control ban ... Contradicting national efforts to control birthrate and sexually transmitted diseases, four member schools of the Texas State U. system recently abolished the sale and/or distribution of contraceptive devices from the schools' health clinics. The ruling will affect Angelo State U., Sul Ross U., Southwest Texas State U. (STSU) and Sam Houston U. John Noone, director of the STSU Health Clinic, said although there was "considerable student involvement and opposition," the Board of Regents quickly "handed down their decision." Noone said that aside from the distribution of contraceptives "things won't change that much." He then confirmed, "We will comply with the (board of regents') decision." Bill Morrison, The Pine Log, Stephen F. Austin State U., ... Student stranded in Germany Mohsen Zakeri, an Iranian-born graduate student U. of Utah, has been stranded in Germany for more nine months. Zakeri, a doctoral candidate in the hi department, returned to Iran last summer to con research for his dissertation. When he attempted Io up his renewed student visa in Frankfurt, German was told that questions about his application v delay his return to the university. His visit to East E was considered "adverse information" to reneo visa. Shauna Bona, The Daily Utah Chr cle, U. of Utah U.. Who ya gonna call? ... FLIGHTS Name Street City State Zip become victims of alcohol overdose, said Dr. John Adams, chairman of the Psychiatry Department at the UF Health Science Center. After exams, UF dorm rooms are cramped with rosy-cheeked freshmen and seniors alike, competing for space at kegs inside of closets. Young men and women rapidly take turns trying to bounce quarters off the Formica table top and into their beer mugs. Those who miss must drink. "I played Pass-Out," said UF student Alan Crouch. "It's roll the dice and see how drunk you can get and how quickly. I was a sophomore and everyone was my age or younger," Crouch said. What you drink, how'much and how fast determines alcohol's effect on the system. However, no amount of alcohol is a "safe amount" Adams said, because body weight, mood, drinking experi- ence, type of food eaten and time be- tween eating and drinking also deter- mine its effect. When a person drinks a large amount of alcohol very quickly, he runs the risk of alcohol overdose.
