The special talent of accompa- niment," says Shirle Smith, Arts Programs Coordi- nator, "involves one Artist being able to communicate with the other on a vkry complex level, so that both may be able to corvey the mood of the piece they are performing with grace and unity." Reconstructing houses and working on a shelter for the homeless isn't in the LSA Course Guide, but Gail Silberman learned a lot from it. Silberman, a senior majoring in Sociol- ogy and Women's Studies, has been involved in the College Democrats, the Involved in Michigan Political Action committee, the Student Struggle for Soviet Jewry, and the Student Alumni Council. She has also been in- volved in Alpha Phi Omega, the national service fraternity. It is through Alpha Phi Omega that Gail began her work for homeless people in Ann Arbor. Because of her efforts to renovate and reconstruct housing for those with no homes, Gail is highly deserving of the Volunteer of the Week position. She also was the University's finalist for the nationwide 1988 Robinson Humani- tarian Award, given to undergraduate students who are exceptionally in- volved in community service. Gail's work with homeless people has made life worth living for several Ann Arbor residents. It has also given her life more meaning.
