Likewise, senior Sara Clark will earn her fourth-year letter. Together, they represent the future and past successes of the team. Marotti, an All-American last year at Branham High School in San Jose, Calif., comes as a needed addition to the Wolverine defense after the graduation of Trisha Mondul, an All-Big Ten defensive team selection last year. "The team in general drew me to Ann Arbor," Marotti said. "The players acted like a team and a family." CLARK, a senior forward, has played an important role in that family. She was an All-State selection in New Jersey her senior year in high school and represented Michigan on the All-Big Ten second team last year. According to Marotti, Clark is also a team leader. "Even though she's not a captain," said Marotti, "I think she holds the team together. She's always there when I need her." It is ironic that Marotti would need anybody after coming to Michigan with such an impressive resume. As a four-year letter winner at Branham, she led the team to a league title each year. In addition to being the team captain for three seasons, she was an All-Conference player her junior and senior years before the All-American performance. Play such as this led to numerous college opportunities. Before deciding on Michigan, Marotti also considered Iowa, the University of P Massachusetts, Northwestern and North Carolina. WHILE MAROTTI has been putting together impressive prep statistics, Clark has seen some major changes during her four years in Ann Arbor. Her first season began slowly - she scored only one goal and the team recorded a 1-13 record. She sees the addition of Patti Smith as assistant coach last year as the turning point. "Patti added a lot of intensity to the team," Clark said. Marotti, too, was able to see this intensity. "It's different from high school in that the players are here because they really love the sport," said Marotti. "You're here to play hockey and to go to school. That's what we concentrate on." For Marotti, that concentration, other than field hockey, consists of majoring in kinesiology, which she hopes will lead to a career in sports medicine back in California. "Academically, Michigan should really help me get into a medical school," she said. FIELD HOCKEY, though, is still the major focus for Marotti. She wants to play for the 1992 National Team, which would include a ticket to Barcelona, Spain for the Summer Olympics. Coach Karen Collins views this as a realistic goal. "She's a person who came in and played right away. And from here, she is only going to get better," Collins said. Marotti sees the Michigan coaching staff as another advantage. "Playing under K.C. (Collins) is really going to help me. She's a really well-respected coach." The combination of Clark and Marotti seems to be working well so far. "Sandie has done really well," said Clark. "She's been pushing the ball up to the forwards and also taking a lot of shots, which is what we need. She's filled her role. "WE'RE STARTING to come together as a team," Clark added. The team decided that it's goal this year would be to capture the Big Ten crown. Both players still see that as realistic. "We just have to play together," said Marotti. And, after this season, Clark thinks the team will only get better. "They've got a freshman starting now. They're going to be really good next year." Collins knows this will be tough without Clark, though. "Sara had tremendous enthusiasm. Every year she accomplished her goals. And she should only get better this year."
