4 Page 10 - The Michigan Daily - Wednesday, September 28, 1988 Marvin hams it up By JIM PONIEWOZIK THERE'S nothing quite like the chemistry between a master musician and a clever lyricist. History is rife with examples: Rodgers and Hammerstein, Gilbert and Sullivan, Gershwin and Gershwin ... Hamlisch and you? It's quite possible. Not only has composer Marvin Hamlisch teamed up with writers like Carole Bayer Sager and Johnny Mercer in the past; he has also, thanks to an invention of his he calls "rent-a-com- poser," combined with members of his audience - although, admittedly, he does most of the work. "A lot of people have terrific titles that would make great songs, but they don't have a composer around to fit a melody to it," he says. Enter musical tailor Ham- lisch, who solicits bizarre song titles from audience members and writes melodies for them on the spot, to the delight and amazement of his listeners. But then, Hamlisch is no newcomer to making songs to order. Since he was picked by producer Sam Spiegel, after hearing him play piano at a party of his, to write the score for his film The Swimmer in 1968, he has been heavily involved in film and theater collaborations. Among the most notable of his stage efforts include the scores for A Chorus Line and They're Playing Our Song - a musical which, ironically, drew on his troubled relationship with Bayer Sager, with whom he co-wrote the music. But Hamlisch has been most acclaimed for his film work, in particular the scores for The Way We Were and The Sting, which netted him a combined three Academy Awards in 1974. And he has since branched out into television - if you've ever thrilled over your morning coffee to the inspiring strains of the Good Morning America theme song, you now know who to thank. Still, Hamlisch's roots lie in performing live, as you will discover if you see him this evening. If you do, bring a good title. He may literally be "playing your song." MARVIN HAMLISCH will play at 8 p.m. at Hill Auditorium. Be there or write your own damn music. --.Sept.28, Wed.
