4 Page 12 - The Michigan Daily - Monday, September 26, 1988 The Schef's Specialty BY ADAM SCHEFTER Deacons' coach Dooley needs wake-up call Football, like any other sport, is a game that is played to be won. Players don't lift weights in the off-season for the fun of it. They don't come up to school in the scorching hot days of August to sit by the pool: They don't devote their lives to football not to come out on top. They play to win. Period. That means that when a team is down by 16 points late in the game, it continues to fight and claw and do everything in its power to make all its- hard work worthwhile. A little over a week ago, Miami trailed Michigan, 30-14, with seveti,- minutes left to play, prompting Miami head coach Jimmy Johnson to cal for the two-minute offense. The Hurricanes drove down the field once. Thn once again. And finally the long and exhausting comeback was complete. Wake Forest's turn to rally This week, it was Wake Forest's turn to brace for the stretch run. The Deamon Deacons trailed, 19-3, with 4:44 on the clock. They had the ball at Michigan's 49-yard line with three time-outs remaining. They had quarterback Mike Elkins, who in addition to having over 5,4QO career passing yards, seventh best in the history of the Atlantic Coat ' Conference, was already 18-for-30 for 166 yards on the afternoon. They had wingback Ricky Proehl, Elkins' favorite target, who earlier in. the season caught a 69-yard touchdown pass, and already had four catches crE the day for 39 yards. But most of all, they were working against a Michigan defense that was susceptible to the big play. Michigan coach Bo Schembechler, already 0-2, couldn't help but feel '' little deja vu. "I looked up at that clock and saw that 16-point differential and said, 'We could blow that lead quick.' " Ay Hang down your head, Bill Dooley Someone should have told all this information to Wake Forest head coach Bill Dooley, because Dooley cheated his players, his fans, and himself by not going for the win. or There is no way that his players should have been huddling up after each play. There is no way that his players should have been freely shuffled in and out while time was running. And running the ball seven of tie 11 play is on the drive when your team is trying to beat the clock? s "I figured whoever we play, especially after the way we played in the e final few minutes last week, would go to the passing attack," said Michigags linebacker J.J. Grant. "They surprised me when they came out and did what they did." Defensive lineman and co-captain Mark Messner said: "I'm glad that they didn't go into that hurry-up offense, because that's very tiring. When they don't huddle up and you are in a pass rush situation every time, it takes a 1ot h out of the defensive personnel." id, The Wolverines were allowed to sit back, regroup, and pick up their defensive assignments while their fans could rest more easily than against Miami. Wake Forest finally did score on the drive, but they managed to eat or up 4:17 in the process. Not the most opportune time to go on a ball-control 3) drive. There were no Hurricanes to be found this time around, and JOHN MUNSON/Da Michigan's defense cut short Wake Forest's fourth-quarter rally. 1 'M' season tickets available this week c{, ,S iTY OF " ern .., w - / ,, s j'crevnA' J Rt4' A NERICA SK Cy Student season tickets for Hockey season tickets Michigan basketball and hockey are students cost $60. available at the athletic ticket office. "I don't know why we didn't go into the hurry-up offense at the end,"-r ins said. "I really couldn't tell you. Yeah, I was surprised. Maybe it was; ealistic to think that we could get those points back." The 19-9 victory was certainly aided by Michigan's Bole-ing game, with gpin Tony Boles striking the alleys for 214 yards. Tripp Welborne's two rceptions halting Wake Forest drives helped. Messner, who became chigan's all time tackle-for-loss leader with three against the Deamon acons, also contributed. But chalk this win up to a negative attitude and poor coaching on the part Wake Forest as much as anything else. "I'm not really upset with our football team," Dooley said. "I'r- appointed because I thought that we might have a chance to win the game nehow, someway." Not the way you chose to play, coach. Maybe I'm only playing Monday rning quarterback. But if I'm playing quarterback, and my team has the ghtest chance of pulling out a win, I'm going to go for the win every e. NWrAnde f on teCopnPg VV6-1U. ~. E... .. .. .. . .. .. .. . .. .. .. .
