'M' field hockey bounces
back for victory over Ohio

4

BY ANDREW GOTTESMAN
The Michigan field hockey team came back from a
disappointing 2-2 tie with Kent State on Saturday to
beat Ohio University, 6-1, yesterday and improve its
record to 3-2-3.
"We needed this," Michigan head coach Karen
Collins said. "We needed to get some of our
momentum back." The team had dropped two games
and tied one during a road trip the previous weekend.
Michigan exploded against Mid-American
Conference champ Ohio University 10 minutes into
the game when sweeper Patricia Maran scored the first
of five first-half goals for the Wolverines. Forward
Judy Burinskas followed with a goal 40 seconds later
on a pass from Sharon Cantor.
Three unassisted scores, two by forward Ilene
Meadows and one by midfielder Josee Charvet,
increased the Michigan lead to 5-0 at halftime.
Ohio avoided the shutout when, on one of its six
penalty corners, forward Patti Bullock muscled the ball
in for the team's only score.
"That was really our only problem today," Collins

said. "We can't allow opponents to get all those
corners."
Burinskas recorded her second goal of the day on an
assist by Sara Clark to end the scoring. The loss
dropped Ohio University to 1-4-1.
The victory helped Michigan forget about the
previous day's tie against Kent State.
Michigan fell behind early in Saturday's game on a
goal by midfielder Kristen Yoder and a 25-yard blast by
attack Melissa Lower. The half ended with Michigan in
a 2-0 hole.
"We set that up ourselves," Collins said. "We made
mistakes, and any team is going to capitalize if you
make enough mistakes."
The Wolverines began to come back when
Burinskas scored. Co-captain Robin Ives and Sharon
Cantor assisted on the goal. Michigan tied the game
two minutes later when Ives poked a loose ball into the
goal from close in.
Neither side could score during two 10-minute
overtimes.
