WAKE FOREST enters Saturday's contest (Michigan Stadium, 1
p.m.) with a 2-1 record. That's two more wins than 0-2 Michigan has.
The Deacons return 17 starters off their '87 squad, which finished 7-4
(4-3 in the Atlantic Coast Conference) and just missed earning a bowl
bid.
"People erroneously look at Wake Forest not in the same light that
they would look at Notre Dame and Miami (Fla.)," Schembechler said.
"However, this is a very, very good defensive football team. They have
a solid kicking game and a good quarterback. So we're very wary of this
game this week."
The Deacons' second-year head coach Bill Dooley said, "It will Be
quite a test from the standpoint 'that we haven't faced anyone with that
type of size since we've been here at Wake Forest."
Wake Forest will attempt to counter the Wolverines' size with some
talented players at the skilled positions.
SENIOR Mike Elkins, arguably the ACC's top quarterback, directs
the offense. His favorite target is junior wingback Ricky Proehl, who
has caught 15 passes for 304 yards in the Deacons' first three games.
All-ACC tailback Mark Young and Tony Rogers give Wake Forest two
dependable runners in the backfield.
"We watched a couple of films on them, and overall, they have a lot
of talent," said Wolverine safety Vada Murray, who intercepted two
passes against Miami last weekend. "They have a great quarterback, and
it's going to be a good game."
The strength of the Deacon defense lies in the secondary with all-
conference cornerback A.J. Greene and safety Ernie Purnsley, the team's
leading tackler. Greene doubles as Wake Forest's punt returner.

Quarterback Mike Elkins, one of the top quarterbacks in the
Atlantic Coast Conference, will try to lead Wake Forest to
victory.
Wilson Hoyle, the Deacons' junior place-kicker, connected on 16-of-
20 field goals last season. He has converted three-of-four this year,
including a 51-yarder.
DOOLEY'S biggest concern involves his team's depth. "We just
don't have that many football players," said Dooley, the younger
brother of Georgia head coach Vince Dooley. "From a depth standpoint
we're sort of thin, and we have to depend on freshmen to give us back-
up help in some of the spots."
Wake Forest must also deal with a crowd of 100,000 hostile fans.
The Deacons have not played in front of that many people in their first
three game combined. Wake Forest and Michigan have faced each other
only once before, back in 1976 in a 31-0 Wolverine win.
Last week, the Deacons lost on the road at North Carolina State, 14-
6. "I was disappointed in our loss to N.C. Sate," Dooley said. "It was a
football game played under sloppy conditions, and we didn't capitalize
on our opportunities, and N.C,. State did."
Wake Forest opened the season with wins over Villanova and
Illinois State.

-Injury update: Defensive back Anthony Mitchell will miss
Saturday's game because of a deep thigh bruise he suffered against
Miami. Tight end Derrick Walker, fullback Jarrod Bunch and cornerback
David Key are all questionable. Defensive back Rick Hassel and middle
guard Mike Teeter are expected to see their first action of the season.
-Mark Messner's next tackle for a loss will make him Michigan all-
time leader in that category. He is currently tied with Curtis Greer
(1976-79) with 48.
