4 Page 10 - The Michigan Daily - Thursday, September 22, 1988 Ballroom blitz OK, it's three days later, which means that, if you were at the Living Colour/Soul Asylum concert at the Nectarine Ballroom Monday night, your ears may have stopped ringing by now. The two bands invaded the neon palace, pre-empting the regularly-scheduled techno-drone of New Music night, and gave the crowd not only a healthier dose of guitar rock than that establishment's seen for many a Monday, but a sizable buildup of ear wax as well. Living Colour (below) opened the night with a seismic set that showcased the New York-based band's debut album, Vivid, and featured bandleader Vernon Reid's too-fast-for- -human-comprehension guitar playing, as well as enough tempo changes to induce whiplash. Though a large number of the flannel-clad Soul Asylum audience seemed unfamiliar with the band's work, they were soon won over - so much, in fact, that they called the band back for an encore: a rare enough gesture for a popular opening act, much less one with almost no airplay. When lead singer Corey Glover (right) closed the set asking the crowd, "What's your favorite color?" the answer was obvious. And spelled with a "u." Which left Soul Asylum (bottom right) with some awfully big distortion boxes to fill - which they did, setting a fevered pace from their opening anthem "Sometime to Return." The set, including covers of "Sexual Healing" and "One Tin Soldier," showed the band, which developed a slicker sound on their latest effort, Hang Time, still capable of setting hundreds of heads a-bangin'. Of course, it's going "to be pretty hard to disappoint a crowd when you throw money at them, which guitarist Dan Murphy did, declaring. "15 dollars (the door kprice) isn't our fucking fault." Needless to say, the crowd was forgiving. I Rent a Car from Econo-Car OPEN 7 DAYS A WEEK _ - , - '"" IIY' Know every line in Annie Hall? Do you use the phrase "Capra- esque" in mixed company?
