4 The Michigan Daily - Monday, September 19, 1988-- Page 14 Donald Hall's latest collection filled 4 with ten The Ideal Bakery By Donald Hall Harper and Row/ Perennial Library $6.95/paperback Because Hall (who taught at the University from 1957 to 1977) is first and foremost a renowned poet, it's to be expected that his prose is filled with artistically rendered imagery. The stories in this col- lection succeed admirably on that level; they can appreciated sheerly for the pleasure of reading his description of the first snow of winter in New Hampshire, 1938, or his recollection of freshly-baked crullers at the hometown bakery ("Oh, the light still-warm delicate crisp gently greasy blonde unsugared braids of dough!") The real treasure of The Ideal Bakery, however, lies in the artistry with which Hall tells a story, so that the closing sentence stands as an unfailingly honest statement that sticks to the reader's ribs. "The First Woman" begins the collection. Like many of the other eleven stories, the narrative is loaded with nostalgic detail and, like many of the other stories, it meditates on sexual politics. William Bolter believes that "the world is a bed," and his life begins, as does the story, when he loses his virginity as a teenager in Cape Cod. From that point on, his partners are as temporary and as numerous as he can manage. He lives a life of "pro- miscuous harmony" until the age of 51, when he seeks out that very first Zpting treats for the taker conquest, who is now almost 60. He expects an open-armed re.nion, but instead she denounces him as an old fool. He's shocked at first, but in the end the old dog remains content with his old tricks. Not so different is Ned Hightower in "Mrs. Thing," who steals Ros- alind away from his best friend, pledges his undying love for her and makes her take a vow that she will be faithful to him while he goes to break the news to his wife, but instead he finds another "dolly" less than six weeks later. On the flip side of these monstrous male egos is Richard in "Keats' Birthday," who resigns to himself that he will never be the man of action that his wife desires, let alone compete with her idealized version of the late poet: "Richard felt a quick, familiar collapse of mood. Of course Eleanor was right. There. was something lacking in him. He was not John Keats: He was or- dinary, complacent, mild, and agreeable." Richard is, like most of the protagonists in the book, struggling with his self-esteem. This conflict is most fully played out in the book's last, longest, and most ambitious story, "Argument and Persuasion." A strange and complex tale in- volving a story within a story, it powerfully captures a the frustration and dissatisfaction of a young teacher at a two-year college.
