Page 10 - The Michigan Daily - Friday, September 16, 1988 'Lesson learned in local Limb BY PAM WARSHAY IF you follow dance in Ann Arbor at all, you've heard of her. But this weekend, Whitley Setrakian, best known as the choreographer for People Dancing, goes out on a limb in a rare performance of her solo and duet works. Out on a Limb boasts the premiere of "The Lesson." Setra- kian's motivation for this piece came from Ugene Ionesco' s play entitled The Lesson - the story of a teacher and his young and eager student. Performed by Setrakian and actor/dancer David Salowich, 'The Lesson' is striking because of Solo- wich's eerie yet witty dramatization of his role; it is amusing, realistic, and quite entertaining. Other pieces are "Baby," per- formed to the music of George Thorogood; "Annapurna," an avant garde solo; "Crazy Emilia," Setra- kian's homage to Jose Limon's classic work "The Moor's Pavane;" "Baby II," a new addition to the repetoire; and "Quark" - a New Age version of the Adam and Eve story Posters Continued from Page 8 putting the time and energy into it. Most of the bands I know in Detroit either have someone in the band that is an artist or they know someone who is. With the club owners in Detroit it's gotten to the point where they expect the band to put out a flyer." Lately Grimshaw has been quite busy. ArtRock, a local company specializing in buying and selling rock artworks of various kinds, has printed two 20th Anniversary posters commemorating shows by the Doors and Jimi Hendrix, as well as reprinting the1980 Iggy Pop poster. His newest work is the poster for Monday's Living Colour/Soul Asy- lum show. Perhaps the new work he is most proud of is the album cover he did for the Igster's new LP, Instinct. Album covers are some- thing he "would like to do a lot more of." When asked for advice on poster design for new bands, Grimshaw replied, "There is an infinite number of ways to approach the design of this stuff and if you think of a new. one that's probably the best thing to do." GARY GRIMSHAW will sign autographs in basement of the Union today from 3 to 5 p.m. Artrock will have samples of his work for sale. 0 Festival Continued from Page 9 blems of Japanese middle class families. But Ozu distinguishes him- self by successfully using his specific culture as being representative of all people. "One key to understanding Ozu's films, like all great dramas, is to follow the subtext. The action of Ozu's characters is very deliberate, and most of the aesthetic appeal of Ozu's films emerges from the mental exercise the viewer has in following the characters exploits in conjunction with the other cinematic elements," says Louis Goldberg, who selected the films for this restrospective. Ozu uses few technical devices in his pictures, thus causing the ones that he does employ to be more effective. Many scenes are shot from a low angle, about three feet above the ground, as if from the view of an adult in the traditional crouching position. Also, for this reason, ceilings had to be constructed on the sets, which Ozu did before Welles did such in Citizen Kane (although the latter is usually attributed with being the first to do so). Robert Danly, director of the Center for Japanese Studies, has been highly supportive of bringing Japanese films to campus. The Ozu fest is the largest undertaking to date and at a great expense to the Center. But not many of these films ever reach campus, and just as rare is the opportunity to concentrate so intensely on a single director. THE OZU FILM FEST begins tonight at 7 p.m. at Lorch Hall. GET IT!
